Changed Hotmail password but still logging in?

The password was changed and the secret question/answer combo was changed and access was not possible. Bit of a strange one here. Friend of mine lost access to his Hotmail account (entered details on dodgy website etc).

The password was changed and the secret question/answer combo was changed and access was not possible.

At the same time though they were still able to check their Hotmail on their iPhone some hours later and eventually used the password reminder feature (which for some reason pointed to their own email account) to email themselves a new password.

Any ideas why the iPhone would still have been able to connect? (via POP3/IMAP it was, not the browser)
