I stayed here in Koh Tao - http://www.kohtaobansdiving.com/
Rooms were really nice and we did the diving with them as well.
Koh Tao has some lively bars and if you rent a scooter/motorbike you can visit more remote parts of the island. It was rainy season when we were there, lots of people were having accidents on the bikes from the slippery roads so we personally didnt do it.

Koh Pha Ngans main beach is touristy and tacky. But it's class :D

hang on, Samui and pha ngan are touristy but so is phi phi! I never met so many drunk irish people as I did on Phi Phi!! Now don't get me wrong OP, they're all stunningly beautiful islands, just that they are quite touristy.
I've not been to Koh Tao, but heard it's much quieter, many people go there for diving.

Take a look also on lonely planet and rough guides website.

Phangnan is a kip, full moon party wahaaay - my hole, whole load of drunken gobs ruining the place along with what are known to be the most corrupt coppers in Thailand and overpriced accomodation, although granted the other side of phangnan is okish, samui is just as bad a s Phuket, Phi phi rules, although the opening of that irish bar after the tsunami is a bit cringey but its still the best island there, head further down south past krabi and there are smaller more remote islands, ie islands relatively untouched, some don't have a bar on them, these are the real deal!!! There are supposedly a set of islands also off the cost of Thailand/Burma that are majestic, met people who have been there on my travels and they said they were amazing , fcuk all tourists, looking to get there myself in a few months time. Vietnam is supposed to have amazing islands too.

If you're looking for "authentic" thailand then I'd recommend going north as opposed to the south. If you're looking for a great holiday with some lovely people then the south will have no problem satisfying you. Samui is lovely, some great places to stay and go out in. Look at Sawadee.com , you can get hotel reviews from travellers who have stayed there.

Thanks everyone, really confused now! we were heading to the likes of samui etc on that side as heard that the weather in June is best there??
All we want is sun, beautiful settings, white sandy beach and a bit of good atmosphere for nights out. No tack!!

I stayed in the Bill Resort in Lamai on Koh Samui for Five nights. Nice resort, not too fancy but comfortable and clean. Lovely staff. It's a great base for exploring the rest of the island. They rent scooters and cars (along with a bunch of other places in Lamai) It's about a 10 minute walk down the beach to the city centre of Lamai which is of course touristy but you will never think you are in Majorca!!! The Ladyboy cabaret is class!!! As the resort is outside the main area it's very tranquil and relaxed and the beach is gorgeous. It's very close to the grandmother and grandfather rocks.

    Best of luck
