If this is the wrong forum can a mod move it please, thanks.

I just know someone here will be able to help me:

Philips TV - Model 25PT482A/05 Maybe 1998, sticker says?
Has sticker on it with UK phone number on back?

    Cost of TV €20
Borrowed Philips universal remote.. cost €29.99

Can get into installation menu no problem, using the search option it seems to scan through from 453 mhz to 800 mhz only picks up TV3 and TG4 no sign of any other channel, not even a hint of one.

I am only using a "rabbit's ears" aerial but have had no problems getting RTE1 and RTE2 on any other tv.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like a champions league problem :)

Dont know where you are, here are the frequencies. Pick your local transmitter.

    http://www.rtenl.ie/downloads/television-frequencies.pdf

    I am guessing Wicklow ???

And if thats the case the problem well may be the lack of a VHF tuner on that TV.

  • Well it has to be the tv then. Can you do a manual search and go through more frequencies? Or can you change the band it's searching through?

Set the TV's country to Ireland - that way you will scan in the Band III frequencies that RTE 1 & RTE 2 might be on, depending on where you are.

Carlow........ ok ..bimbo question....I looked at that very helpful and ununderstandable (to me) I seem to only have mhz? I have tuned other TV's and had UHF and VHF... do they make TVs with just MHZ? Does MHZ secretly mean something else? So if there is no VHF tuner, whatever that is? Does that mean I'm stuck with two channels? Sorry for all the questions but this is wrecking my head now, I have tried googling and tried 5 different remotes..

Thanks for your help so far :)

    Hi thanks..

Manual search does same, only much slower and I manually have to stand an inch from TV and press remote + button... but still same result and can't change frequency, just MHZ.

great name.... this could be the solution... if you never hear from me again it means I've got lost on google trying to find how to change country on TV....

I'll try this, sounds good. Thanks :)

    Its a CRT ?

Go to menu button and then manual store, then change system from UK to Europe. Search should show up as starting at lower than 125MHZ. Click on search.

What frequencies in MHZ are TV3 and Tg4 ?

I don't know what a CRT is?

    TV3 510 MHZ
    TG4 487 MHZ

    Installation

    A Language
    B Manual Store
    C Auto Store
    D Sort

    Manual Store

    A Search
    B Programme Number
    C Store

    ^^^^^^ That's all I have??

Sounds like it is a UK TV with UHF band only. RTE 1 and 2 usually on VHF band.

I'm starting to think my €20 tv may not have been such a bargain..
Well, it was a charity shop purchase so no harm..

I'm actually on to Philips Free Helpline now, I didn't even think they'd talk to me.... but so far so good... :)

Ok I was on hold with horrific music for 28 mins.. I'm giving up for tonight..I'll call them in the morning. I've searched for some way to change country setting, it doesn't seem to exist..

    Thanks for all your input.

Some TVs display the frequency in MHz (megahertz), others display the frequency as VHF and/or UHF channel numbers i.e. VHF 5-12 (Ireland D-J), UHF 21-69. Either way it means the same thing.

The VHF tuner is that piece of hardware in the TV that receives the TV channels broadcast in the VHF spectrum, in your case RTÉ 1 and 2.

Your TV model went into production 1993/94 region, could not find a manual online. As has been said it may be a UK model without a VHF tuner. The UK does not use the VHF spectrum for TV broadcasting.

CRT TV = Cathode Ray Tube i.e. old style, big bulky glass tube TV. Now we have slim Plasma, LCD and LED TVs.

Aha, so CRT = BFT (big feckin telly :))

Thank you cush for taking the time to give me such an informative reply. I did search the whole of the web for a manual too, paying for it didn't seem worth it.

    Q. Is it possible to get a VHF tuner put in? Cheap?

    Q. Will RTE 1 and RTE 2 appear on UHF at any stage?

"Now we have slim Plasma, LCD and LED TVs" "We" ? ? not me... I wish .. ;-)

    thanks

If you go down to your charity shop and look for a video recorder that might have one, if its not a UK model. Alternatively, move to Dublin, we are all fierce modern up here and have the UHF from 3rock.:D

The little silver box that the aerial plugs into inside the telly comes in two versions, UHF or UHF/VHF. Not worth changing though.

OK you are getting your TV signal from Mount Leinster judging by the frequencies you supplied (CH 23 and 26 are Tv3 and Tg4 on analogue). Unfortunately Mount Leinster uses VHF for analogue RTE1 and 2 and UHF for TV3 and TG4.

In the event that you choose to use a cheap VCR as the solution to get both the frequencies for RTE1 and 2 tune to VHF BandIII Channel F 191.25MHz and Channel I 215.25MHz.

BUT, you should think of getting a Digital Terrestrial TV (DTT) box like this. Its €60 and a good investment. Analogue (what you are watching at present) is due to be switched off in 2012. It will be replaced by DTT which is also currently on air.

You will get RTE1 2 TV3, Tg4 and RTE News by just connecting this box to that TV (the TV does have a scart connection at the back ?). No more snowy picture. Nice clear picture. Your indoor aerial will suffice if you are getting good analogue TG4 at the moment. The box also plays back movies (if you had a USB drive connected to it).

Not TV3 at the moment, but you will get a RTENL test card instead, but you get TV3 on UHF at the moment. Probably the best solution for you, as it will work on other tellies as well. I would not recomend getting a VCR at the moment, bad investment.

Unless it's free of course, nobody would charge for a VCR these days, would they?

I just got rid of a perfectly good 20 year old JVC VCR a short while ago. No SCART though, but it did have a VHF tuner. ;)

    * * * UPDATE * * *

    Hi all and thanks again...

Philips helpline goes to UK and they have no clue...I might have been speaking Irish to them for all the help they were.

Returned Philips remote control to my local friendly electrical store with chocolate for nice man who loaned it to me overnight!

He told me (as others here have suggested) to try a VCR. Of course I only gave my VCR to the same charity shop a few weeks ago. A guy bought it as I was still taking it out of the car. So no VCR.

So I am telling a friend my predicament, and she produces a VCR she was about to recycle at the dump.. and it's a Philips so remote works. I also seem to have acquired a Podge & Rodge video in it!

Now I've got sidelined by watching Pimp my Ride! ..

I did try quickly and seem to have RTE1 and RTE2 just can't seem to get all four stations at once... but I'll figure it out. It's only something simple I'd say. I fried my brain last night trying so many options, so I'm happy now.

    Thanks again everyone..:)

Oh and I am a Dub :p just a culchie blow in now! You and your Three Rock! You probably have a fancy new fangled flat screen TV too!

Thanks for that, it does have a scart connection. Two of them in fact, quite the fancy tv! :p I'm holding out to win the Lotto though, then I'll move back to Dublin beside the sea and have a huge ginormous flat screen TV!

2012? I'll hang on and see if the world ends first...Wouldn't want to have spent €60 and then have no tv, house, life, car, food, etc..

Unfortunately I have a new fangled flat screen, but it only has MPEG2 so no DTT video. I am waiting for the launch to know what they are going with before I buy a newer fangleder flatter screen TV. With MEG4!

RTÉ 1 and 2 are available on UHF from almost all transmtters, except 6. They will not be converted to analogue UHF as it was decided in the late 90's early 2000's that the allocated UHF frequencies for these channels would be used for DTT planning instead.
