Fixing field drainage

A friend has renting a field for the last 5 years that he's put his cows out on in summer. He's been offered it for quite a good price, so we checked it out a bit more. It's a bit mottled under the surface (6 inches down or so), but not much surface water to be seen except in the absolute worse weather. Been in pasture for at least 7-8 years, the guy who owns it doesn't really care what condition it's in. The soil is compacted, only about 4 worms to be seen in the pit we dug, top is all poached, it's just a mess! Grass roots only going to about 25cm. My friend's got a different field that he can use this summer for his herd so we were wondering if he should buy it, then we should get someone in to subsoil it in the summer and just start fresh for next year?

    Really appreciate any advice!
