Nice one man. :) What Irish fighters are competing. Egan, Nevin, Barnes, Joyce?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,375 ✭✭✭✭walshb

As far as I know it's almost a full team, with Egan and Donovan and Barnes and Joyce and O'Neill and Taylor. The Daily Star listed the full team last week. I can't recall all the names.

I'll definitely have an oul gawk at that when it comes on. Great find Walsh. Hopefully the Turks don't get sour and pull out of the competition when we are beating them :D

Katie Taylor bounced back from her recent defeat in the Czech Republic with an11-0 preliminary round win over Egyptian lightweight Ellah Ayat at the men's and women's Prime Ministry Tournament in Ankara, Turkey on Wednesday.

The tournament which features 22 Nations saw John Joe Nevin, a bronze medal winner at the 2009 World Senior Championships, surprisingly beaten 6-0 by Yonusov Anvar of Turkestan.

Tipperary heavyweight Con Sheehan, the current EU and Irish champion, beat Yong Wang of China 8-3. However, an injury to his left hand sustained in his victory will rule him out of the rest of the tournament.

Drimnagh middleweight Sinead Kavanagh lost 10-3 to Nurcan Goshel of Turkey.

Pity Sheehan is out of the tourn. Must be a fairly prestigious tournament so with 22 counties competing.

Shame about Sheehan alright. Yes, it seems to be quite a tough and well entered competition. Still no results up for Donovan, Moylette, Joyce etc. They are due in action today/tonight.

what is the deal with the scoring. there's some absurdly low results

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,375 ✭✭✭✭walshb

    Thanks Mike,

holy god, Egan loses 1-0. What was going on there? Sounds like a real fencing
    match.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 215 ✭✭mjon3105

I agree with you both scoring has been unusually low so far apart from in a very small number of instances - though Katie Taylor has managed double figures in both contests so far with 11-0 via Ellah Ayat of Egypt and 10-2 via the ex-German pro Tasheena Bugar 10-2. Bugar was German amateur champion as an 18yrs old early in this decade then finding few serious challengers in Germany turned Pro, winning 3 of her 4 fights by "knock outs" but was subsequently re-instated as an Amateur. I understand that there are "moves afoot" by a few former pros, to be reinstated before 2012 but such requests are NOT likely to succeed, under current rules.

Sonya Ochigava is NOT taking part in this tournament. Liverpool's Natasha Jonas lost narrowly to Bulgaria's Eliseeva last night hence Taylor meets the Bulgarian again tonight. Britain's Lucy O'Connor is still in the tournament as is Hartlepools' Savannah Marshall. The British women have recently had a very significant financial contribution from their sporting authorities to prepare for London 2012. (So too the Russian,Indians, and especially the Chinese)

Tonight's quarter finals are again being covered LIVE from the Ringside in Ankara on website www.turkboks.gov.tr and also for those with access to Turkish TV satellite stations, I am told it is on SES TV.

In the other womens quarter finals tonight, Claire Ghabrial of Australia meets Canada's ,Stephanie Walker; Angel Erkan of Turkey fights Karolina Gracyz of Poland whilst in Taylor's half of the draw, Oleksandra Sydorenko of Ukraine comes up against the French champion Lucie Bertaud . The "dark horse" this time could be the Polish girl who was World ranked behind Ochgava at the 57 kg weight and like the Russian has now moved up to 60kg.

As to the low scores, sorry "Duagre" can't help you there- perhaps someone with a super fast broadband connection can have a look on line tonight.

Here, courtesy of IABA P.R.O Bernard O'Neill www.iaba.ie is the latest from Ankara:

    "
Ireland's Senior and Youth World champions Katie Taylor and Ray Moylette and Gary Molloy will both box for places in their respective finals at the Prime Ministry Tournament in Ankara,Turkey following quarter final wins today.

But European Youth champion Jason Quigley is out of the tournament following a 4-1 quarter final reversal to Turkey's 2008 Olympian Adam Kelicci.

Molloy got Ireland off to a positive start with a 7-2 victory over Alexander Tiscan of Moldova this afternoon. The Moate club-man will now meet England's Khalid Yafai in Saturday's flyweight decider.

Moylette followed that up with a 2-0 victory over Turkey's Onur Sipal to set up a semi final clash with John Joe Joyce's great rival Gyula Kate of Hungary, who Joyce beat at the 2008 Olympics.

Taylor, meantime, took her tally to 29 points scored and just two conceded in three bouts with a 7-0 decision over Bulgaria's Denitza Eliseeva.

The Bray woman will face Irkan Melek of Turkey tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Irish head-coach Billy Walsh has confirmed that Con Sheehan has broken the thumb in his left hand.

The Clonmel heavyweight, the current EU and Irish champion, sustained the injury in Wednesday's win over Yong Wang of China.

    from www.independent.ie - sunday 11 april

BOXING: Irish head-coach Billy Walsh will make a decision on Katie Taylor's fitness this morning after the World and European champion cruised into the 60Kg final at the 32-nation Men's and Women's Prime Ministry tournament with a semi-final victory in Turkey yesterday.
The Bray woman, boxing for the fourth time in four days, advanced to the lightweight final after her Turkish opponent, Erkan Melek, was retired by her corner in the second round in Ankara. Taylor was 6-0 up.
However, Taylor injured her right hand in the bout and it remains to be seen whether she will take part in today's decider with Australia's Claire Ghabrial.
"Katie injured her right bicep in her win and she'll have a fitness test (this morning) and we will make a decision then," said Walsh.

...whilst we wait for news from Turkey herewith some good news from the
Gee Bee tournament in Helsinki, from IABA.ie: :-

    "
Four Irish boxers will compete for gold in Sunday's Gee Bee finals In Helsinki, Finland.

Declan Geraghty, Ryan Lindberg, David Oliver Joyce and Eamon O'Kane (pictured above) are just one bout away from finishing on top of the podium.

O'Kane is facing a tough task as he will be in against two times World champion Abbos Atoev of Uzbekistan.

The Ulster man, a bronze medal winner that the 2008 European Senior Championships, booked his ticket into the middleweight final with a 12-2 win over Glodi Eneste today.

Geraghty, Lindberg and Joyce were also in top form, the trio all earning impressive decisions this afternoon.

But AIBA World Youth bronze medalist Tommy McCarthy bowed out despite a good performance against Ainar Karlson of Estonia.

Willie McLaughlin lost out 5-2 his preliminary round clash with World Senior silver medalist Andrei Zamkovoy on Friday.

Eleven nations are competing in Helsinki.

Katie did NOT pass her fitness test in Ankara (following injuring right hand in semi final win yesterday) thus Australia's Claire Ghabrial declared Champion at 60kg. A very good win for Britain's 18 years old Savannah Marshall from Hartlepool, a real medal prospect for the 2012 Games

David Oliver Joyce won gold and scooped the boxer of the tournament award at the Gee Bee Multi Nations in Helsinki, Finland today.

Joyce, the current European Union featherweight champ, beat Hurshib Pojibaev on a count-back to finished on top of the lightweight podium following three wins in three days.

But there was finals disappointment for Declan Geraghty, Ryan Lindberg and Eamon O'Kane, who was trading middleweight leather with two times World champ, Abbos Atoev of Uzbekistan.

O'Kane, a bronze medal winner at the 2008 European Championships, was leading going into the last round but the fight was stopped after the Belfast man was caught with a body shot.

Geraghty, who picked up a hand injury in the second, was edged out 10-9 by Beijing Olympian Vincenzo Picardi of Italy and Lindberg retired because of a cut near his left eye in the third versus ex Russian World champ, Sergei Vodopianos.

The six man Irish squad, which also included Willie McLaughlin and Tommy McCarthy, won one gold, three silver and one bronze in Helsinki and Irish team manager, Paddy Barnes senior, was delighted with the haul.

"The lads were in against World champions and Olympians and the quality was very high. When you consider the quality opposition the lads were boxing
against we are delighted with the five medals," he said.

    Thanks for the updates, Mike.

Must have been a very high standard at the show if the double
    Olympic champion Tischenko lost.

    Pity about Taylor.

Regarding the other tournament; wasn't Abbos Atoev not a LH
in Beijing? Has he dropped to middle?

Katie Taylor still managed to pick up the boxer of the tournament award at the men's and women's Prime Ministry Tournament in Ankara, Turkey despite having to withdraw from today's final with Claire Ghabrial of Australia through injury.

Taylor was hot favourite to win gold but was withdrawn from Sunday's lightweight final after picking up an arm injury in Saturday's semi final victory over Turkey's Melek Erkan.

Taylor advanced to the final after Melek was retired by her own corner near the end of the second round of Saturday's last four clash in Ankara. The Irish woman was 6-0 up.

However, she picked up an injury to the bicep in her right hand and Irish head-coach Billy Walsh and her coach and dad Peter withdrew the World and European champ from Sunday's final.

Despite having to pull out of the final however, Taylor still picked up the best boxer award after scoring 35 points and conceding just two in her four bouts to the 60kg final.

Ireland won one silver and two bronze medals in Turkey courtesy of Taylor, Gary Molloy and World Youth champ Ray Moylette.
