The over enthusiastic "marketer" on social-networks is one of the most annoying phenomenons of recent times. The fact that you're aware of such nuisances is good news though.

Too many local businesses and organisations just set up a basic Facebook profile and invite all their friends. A basic profile is geared towards an individual, not a business or organisation. Yes, you can still post up pictures and have access to the same features as regular Facebook users but a Facebook page encourages more interaction through discussion threads and gives the administrator access to analytic tools.

One arguable disadvantage to setting up a page is that you can't invite friends to it and they must become a fan of it themselves. This means a bit of extra effort to build a fanbase but when you do, you'll be able to interact with them more effectively. How you go about attracting people to your Facebook page depends very much on the type of business you are. Including the Facebook Page address in other promotional materials (flyers, newspaper ads etc) will slowly build your fans. Coupling this with Facebook exclusive promotions will help attract people to your page quicker.

If you are running promotions through your Facebook page, make sure you include a way to track it. If you offer people a discount, make sure you get them to quote where they saw it or perhaps post up a coupon to the Facebook page that they can print out. I think it's important to know how effective your promotions they are and how much they are costing you. If you're running a general promotion (i.e. available everywhere, not just on Facebook) then it still benefits you to know how exactly they heard of it.

With your page, status updates appear on your fans profiles as they would for a regular friends status update. You can use your status updates to create a buzz around a particular event (e.g. "Spent ages decorating venue for tonight... it's going to be great!"). The discussions feature is more useful for long-term items (eg: "Who was your favourite performer this year?") and can be helpful in receiving feedback in one place.

That's all I can think of at the top of my head at the moment. If you want, I'll throw up some more ideas later!

    cool thanks mate!

yeh im a rep for apple in college and they want more of an online presence ,facebook etc so was figuring out how to best interact with the student populations!

so far i just have the profile, but on it i dont just do sales pitches like i post tunes to download, cool videos of mac tutorials and also the odd internet viral i come across to appear like im just like the students!

Id update the status once a day , saying if im set up tabletopping anywhere , or telling people how to avail of the discount or an annoucement in general by apple (eg ipad release date etc etc!)

    what you think?!

You're lucky that you're representing a well-respected company like Apple. Will post up some thoughts later on as I'm in a dark, dark, alcohol-induced place at the moment.
