I didn't think it was. Even in Japan otaku are looked down on.

You like to make a lot of threads dont you?

An Otaku is someone who is obsessive about something - doesn't have to be animation, comics or video games but the word has become more associated with those areas of interest. That is different to something being popular with the general public - you can say live action films aren't popular in US cus people look down on super nerdy film fans - everything has it's hardcore fans but it's the general fans that make up the bulk of the market and animation and comics in Japan certainly have that general market.

Animation and comics are very popular in Japan - take a train trip there and see the number of people from very different backgrounds reading comics while in Ireland and the Uk it tends to only a certain group of people who would read them. Look at box office figures from Japan and you can see how well animated films do in the cinema there. There are lots of reasons why such a strong culture for comics and animation has developed there some related to culture and traditional art and others due to outside effects [world war 2 and american involvement etc]

    Because it's amazing. /thread

Mostly it's Narutards if at all though. I think that has turned into the anime version of Twilight.
