Why did they have to ruin Ben's character

In season 6 Ben seems to have been very much dampened down compared to other season's. Last year he was brilliant gathering up all of the oceanic six and his control of Sayid he had a real evil Nazi stare about him but since he murdered John Locke its been all down hill.

After leading the others for years by blind faith talking orders from Jacob who couldn't even to be bothered to appear to him he now seems a shadow of his former self, and just a pawn in the whole run up to the end.

I think that's the point. They dragged Ben's evil machinations out for as long as they could. If anything, I think last season did more harm to his character. All the contradictions and lies. I mean, why the hell did he kill Locke?

Your right ,I think it was a mistake to kill Locke, he would be better to be on the island now as himself and the MIB could still be the same actor as they originally introduced the only difference would be we would still have a strong character like Locke in the show, same with Sayid he's a different character now all for the worse for the show.

    (My own theory)
I'm just waiting for the MIB to appear in the flashsideways to join things up.

Half of them like that now. Kate, Richard, Sawyer, Sayid. I think being stuck on an island for six seasons is started to get to some of the cast:D

Didn't he kill Locke because Locke talked to Eloise Hawking?

I think the point with Ben is that he was manipulated into killing Jacob because he was confused and angry and he is now looking for redemption.

When evaluating the Others you have to remember they all seemed to have this religious notion that they were doing the right thing, that seemed to justify all the terrible things they did. I really really really hope this is explained properly, why the "good guys" kidnapped people, shot at people, killed people, were prepared to kill themselves.

The more it is hinted at that they never really knew Jacob or what was actually happening the stranger it seems that they were prepared to do all this. The writers are going to have to explain what exactly the Others thought was happening and what they were told by Jacob.
