Motorway distance signs

question if anybody knows:

are the distances on the signs on motorways showing distances via existing roads or already trough parts of motorways that are not finished yet?

i.e. sign on M8 around Cork says Dublin 238km(or sth) - is that the distance via Abbeyleix (existing N8) or via unfinished parts of M8/M7?

Via the routes that existed at the time the sign was erected.

Which is why there is a sign on approach to Loughrea (Galway bound) which says Galway is 37KM away, then a bit closer to Galway (on the Loughrea by -pass which list Galway as 39Km away, since the by-pass is a longer route.

would that mean that each time new part is opened all the signs are out of date?
oh my...should have opened company manufacturing these signs... ;-)

i was just thinking this recently actually.

however given certain Co Co's reputation for not replacing signs i wont be expecting anything soon
