Hi heading to Mauritius & Dubai end of june, just wanted to know if any one has any tips where to go/not to go in both locations?

Staying in Legends in mauritius and atlantis the palm in Dubai, not really sure what there is to do in either location apart from some serious relaxing. has anyone been to either before can suggest a few places to visit etc?

Alos Dubai, the wifey to be has it in her head that its going to be cheap to buy ''shoes''. can anyone shed a bit of light on this?

    thanks in advance

    Hi

We went to Mauritius on honeymoon in 2007. Beautiful place... certainly lot's of relaxing to be done.

We stayed in the Paul et Virginie on the North side of the island. I don't think that the Legends is too far from where we stayed. Of an evening we would go to the nearest town , I think it was Grande Bay, a bar called the B52's was a lot of fun the cocktails were fabulous!! (Try not to use the toilets tho!) There was rugby on when we were there so there were a lot of South African's there who kinda made the atmosphere. Also the Banana Bar in the same town was OK of an evening. I have to say nightlife wasn't really pumping.

One thing you have to go on is the catamaran cruise (there are a few) we went on one where you could swim with the dolphins, then travelled onto an island just off the coast... it was a great atmosphere and the food and drinks were just brilliant.

We also went on the submarine day trip, another must see, you can also go on the under water bikes, which my hubby did but I was too afraid!!

We went to the capital Port Louis, which was nice, we had a lovely meal in the shopping centre, then on the way back we went to Pamplemouse Gardens, beautiful spot for some photo's.

You can hire a driver for the day for about €20, but be clear to tell them you want to see the sights by yourself, otherwise they will drag you to places where they get commission on products you buy. We went to the market in Port Louis, (i make jewellery so wanted to buy some beads) there was loads that I would have bought if only they would have let me shop, but they kept grabbing at me and shouting "madame" so I didn't buy it. If you are alright with that then it's worth a visit, I felt our driver took us to a certain point in the market and I was a bit intimidated.

You could of course hire a car yourself as it's just like driving here, exact same road signs etc, and the whole island is only the distance of Dublin to Dundalk so it's tiny... circa 47 km!

Avoid the Capital Port Louis at rush hour because it makes you realise why we have a carbon initiative the fumes are shocking!

For a nice souvenir, get the bus somewhere, because the ticketing machines they use are old CIE (dublin bus) machines, fully equipped with Gaelic printouts.... be sure to puzzle the bus conductor because he will be adamant that the writing on the ticket is in English!! We had a brilliant chuckle at this. have the tickets in our honeymoon album!

You will have a brilliant time there, I did and I don't even like water sports... the people are very friendly (if not so laid back they are horizontal) but really lovely place we plan to go back in a few years for our anniversary.

Hope that helps, if you want any contact details for the agents we used for the tours give me a shout cos I am sure I have them in a folder somewhere.

    Berny

    Hi

I got married in Mauritus in 2006 and we were based at Legends, we could not fault the place in any way really, I presume you are on an AI package as doing the half board can work out expensive there I have heard, I think also their All Inclusive package has changed slightly since then, Karma House is the most fancy of the restaurants there, so I would advise you to book it for what specific nights you wish to dine there as it has to be booked in advance and can get booked out! they have different themes every night in the main restaurant, the ginkgo, which is also where you have breakfast, fantastic choice of everything.

At night they have lots of entertainment and under the AI package every drink was included as regards premium spirits and shots etc. they have a welcome night one evening a week on the beach. They also have water sports so if you are into that, its a bonus.

as part of our package other activities were included, spa treatments, golf a trip to a local island on catamaran which was great fun and other things which I cannot think of off top of my head. The staff cannot do enough for you there and were very helpful

we were in Port Lois some days as we had to go for legal reasons for the marriage, it was very busy and we didn't look about too much there. As what we needed was all at the hotel and as it was AI we stayed there most of the time.

On the Return we stopped off in Dubai for 3 nights, stayed at the Jebel Ali hotel in Dubai, we went to Mall of the Emirates and also did a Bedwan night and the Dune driving experience. we had been told by the ground handler to expect different customs as its a Muslim country but we did not encounter any issues! price wise, its much the same as Ireland, all the shops are same as here, so its just like going to Drudrum or Liffey Valley in that aspects.

I cannot think of anything else to say, if you have any questions PM me :)
