    Hi All
A query regarding buying a car thats an ex taxi. Do I need to re tax the car and re sit the NCT as they would have been registered as a taxi and not private? Are there any other issues, insurancewise for example.

Looking at a few older luxobarges, like this one

Changing from taxi to private is a 5 minute job in tax office. NCT should be ok until next one due but you'd have to check with NCTS. It makes no difference to insurance what the car was previously used for.
My biggest issue would be your choice of car, for the love of jeebus don't buy a high mileage one of those. Get a rust free W124 merc instead, far superior car.
    I drive an ex taxi.

I had a 406 diesel that was ex taxi,Had no problem insuring it, waited until tax was nearly up before changing taxation class back to private, sold it on before nct expired but doubt there would of been any issue getting an nct when that expired.

why not? Would they not be expected to do that kind of mileage, like say a carina/avensis for example. Ive seen many older carinas with well north of 300k

old carina/avensis are a bit different league m8. those are buckets which are easy to get to high miles, withouth spending a fortune.

Merc is merc, even old one, thought e class is not that expencive to run, as its common as chips in ireland.

Its not a luxo barge btw, that yoke doesnt even have leather. If you really whant a merc get the one which is loaded, atherwise its not a merc.

lol at under €2K not exactly caring whether its a "merc" or not - though the one I quoted looks like it does have leather. Its not really that important - im just looking for a cheapish large saloon for a longish commute.

Another question (sorry if its blaringly obvious) whats a W124 merc and whats the significance?

You do realise that the annual tax on that baby could possibly exceed the cost price of the car?

google is your friend m8 ;)

with 2k i would better stop on s60 or s40, you can get better spec aswell m8.

Old destroyed merc will brake your hearth. I had clk200 00' myself, and they are a bit of the pain to maintaine ( you can get some parts no problem, but then some of the simple parts are such a pain to get by!!!)

My uncle has an 01 E200K. Car is well under 100k miles.

In the last few months there's been the bones of 2k thrown at it. The only reason he hasn't gotten rid of it is because it's got some tax left on it and a relatively fresh NCT (for which it required work for too).

That's on a car with a full MBSH and does easy enough driving. If I was in your situation I'd be looking for a Nissan Maxima

The W124 was the previous model e-class, pound for pound one of the best used cars you can lay your hands on if you know how to spot a good one.
That merc you quoted looks like a heartbreaker. Check the bangernomics thread on here.
You can't really compare that merc to older toyotas.

+1 on the Maxima btw ;)
I know a guy who has a couple of newer shape ones for good money. They like a drink though.

the chances are if it was a taxi then it was well looked after as it was his business, but you will have to re-tax it as a private car which as others have said it could cost as much as the car. Parts can also be expensive. A good Jap car would be a better option IMO.

I think you'll find the opposite is true. Taxi drivers spend f-all on cars when they're planning to get rid of them and they usually get rid of them for a reason.
I spent over €800 on mine to get it through its first NCT.
As mentioned, newer Maximas can be got for less the the merc the OP is looking at.

The reason here could be that the new regulations coming in mean taxi's have to be under 9 years old.

The market is gonna be flooded with high mileage ex-taxis for very little money.

And 2.3 petrol auto for a long commute isn't realy ideal either. If your commute is let's say 50 mile one way expect to throw €25/day into it for petrol.

Hi lads.. just bougth ex taxi avensis two weeks ago and my log book just arrived from Shannon. But the problem(not sure if that is a problem) is that the car is private now but in log book is: Motor Tax Class- TAXI. Should be a PRIVATE or is that ok as it is? Car was taxed by previous owner(taxi driver) untill 11/12. Just wondering, do I need contact department of transport that the car is private so they can change this in my log book or should contact motor tax office to make some changes with the tax curent tax? Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

Wow I forgot this thread existed

Yeah I think by the book you need to retax as private - as to have the car validly taxed as "taxi" you need a PSV licence.

So any reason not to buy a 03 mondeo ex taxi with 165k on the clock for very cheap?

If you're buying ex-taxi, you'll have to go to your motor tax office, fill out RF111 form. They'll take your log book and change the taxation class on 'private'. Then u must pay the tax from the date of purchase of the vehicle.
Neacy69 ..if its diesel be careful.. injectors usualy gone at this mileage.. ask seller if they have been replaced or reconditioned already.

Indeed, loads of folk would chance it on the PSV tax but personally I wouldn't.
