I was thinking about this the other day watching the news, id probably only be able recognise one or two of the big cities in Ireland..Dublin, cork limerick and maybe galway although it looks more like the bigger towns in places..deffinately not even waterford! :oso, would you recognise these? please add to the list the ones you would also recognise..sorry if this is in the wrong place but i wanted to get a lot of replies!

Depends on what the picture would show to be honest. Like you can clearly see the Spire in the Dublin picture.

i know a lot about the counties in the uk and am very very good at geography but im crap at naming the towns in the republic of ireland.. or counties...

I know people refer to Cork as the people's republic...

But showing it as the whole world is a bit much...

I fixed the problem! something wrong with the link, anyway back on topic! i would generally be very good at geography and noticing skylines to american cities etc but for some reason irish towns and cities are very difficult!

Lol'd at the cork one as its ment to be one of the citys most reqignisable and most nticeable features but its barley noticable and you can only see it from certain spots of the city :D

Not too familure with Limrick and Galway though :(

Dub's quite easy though,Very nice and Iconic street, always love walking it when Im up there as of the statues and stuff...wish cork had more :(

Why would anyone want to leave Dublin for a one horse culchie town?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,584 ✭✭✭PCPhoto

Im from Cork and live in Dublin ....so those two were easy to recognise .... the limerick one I could have guessed ...but Galway I would have been lost ... would maybe have guessed Galway...based on it being a coast town.

i wouldnt be great at cork/limerick/galway, but id know the south east, the midlands, and some of the north west quite well.

I'd know Dublin anyway but the spike is a giveaway.

I wouldn't have got any of the other 3 for love or money. The Galway one appears to basically have nothing in it?

The Galway pic isn't the best view for recognising the city by any means, unless you're familliar with it heading towards the docks in a boat.

The only one I'd recognise out of those pictures would be Dublin. I've spent a lot of time in Cork but still don't think I'd recognise many of its buildings. Similarly with Galway...I'd probably only recognise it if it was a picture of Shop Street, the Spanish Arch, or one of the pubs! Never been in Limerick in my life, wouldn't have a clue of where that picture was taken.

to anyone from galway im sorry if I picked a bad pic, i wanted to get as much of the skyline in as possible..googling galway skyline or even galway city hadnt great results!

galway always reminded me of athlone and visa versa..mainly for the narrow streets and same looking cathedral

    athlone
    athlone%20031%20copy_jpg.JPG

I think parts of Limerick can be quite similer to dublin at times, these remind me of stevens green and merrion square, which adds to the confusing nature of the way places are built around the country

Please don't. Definitely don't come to Galway with that attitude.

The architecture of Limerick and Dublin seems similar to me - both have square grids city plans with 3-4 storey buildings.

God, anytime I see that spire I get really annoyed! I mean what a waste of money! It's a prime example of Ireland's stupidity during the boom!

you guys need to get out more or at least see more of your own country ;)

and i really don't know how one could see athlone and galway as similar, lived in both for a combined 8 years and they are nothing alike

this is a normal day shop street in galway (in fact its busier at night) http://www.reggie.net/photos/ireland/galway/galway/4777733_crowded_high_street_galway-600.jpg you wouldn't see something like that EVER in athlone

This is true. All of Corks yuppie **** come up to Dublin because this is where the jobs are.

In their defence tho, any of the Cork yuppies I've met are well balanced individuals. They all have a chip on both shoulders.

I'm good with the cities; Dublin is recognisable enough although as someone already said, the Georgian bits are almost the same as Limerick's Georgian bits. There is one vital difference. They seem to have allowed PVC windows in Limerick; in Dublin, you have to keep the originals!

Seriously though, I'm pretty well travelled around most of Ireland but there's swathes I haven't been to. I'd have little idea of some larger towns like Clonmel or Wexford, most of the south east in fact.

    Corkman living in Dublin.
Visited Galway last weekend and must say what a lovely place! Place was pure and lively. Bouncers at the doors, smile and say welcome compared to Cork where is 'Are you alright boi' or Dublin where it's 'Not tonight bud!'

Same with the people, very friendly, rural and pure felt almost how Ireland should be, no-one sitting in a pub with Sunglasses on their head in a pink polo shirt sipping a 'Ken' and going on about their friends new house jus outside Paris.

Have some great banter at the bars with strangers and nothing beats a live band. I suppose its thanks to Cromwell!

A chip on their shoulder they had to leave Cork for the cultureless, passionless, overpriced, scumbag, Ross O'Carrol Kelly infested city of Dublin.

Inter-city/town/village slagging must end here before this turns into yet another "Dublin v the rest" thread.
A place I'd like to visit simply because it look good on photos - Waterford city.

I know Blanchardstown pretty well but I'm not too familiar with the city centre. There was a few occasions where I had to consult google earth before heading out for drinks in town.

I know Dublin city fairly well. Also Kilkenny, which is a town, let's face it, and the sprawling metropolis of Bray.
