hello, over the past few years, I've often had a few calves that werern't able to stand up after calving especially after a hard pull with the jack. however, I have one at the min that was calved 6 days ago and still not up. he is lively as hell on his knees but is making no sign of getting up and have to feed him from a basin twice a day and not too pleased to be getting up every morning before work to feed one calf.

has anyone ever had this problem and what do they do:confused:

Are you sure the ropes are going on and staying on the right part or the calves legs when jacking? ie. above the dew claw (think thats what it is called) on the shin bone

There can be a problem with weak ankle joints in new calves... We had this a few years ago.... I think a vitamen injection will help..

it's acutally at the knees that she is bent over so unlikely that it is the jack. in any case, had her at the vet today and she said that she would get better herself just leave her but it's almost a week now and nothing doing. got impression from vet she wasn't sure of what to gvie her.

what kind of vitamins could i give her

had her at vet today and vet said that it woudl get better in time. however, it's a week now and nothing doing. got impression from vet that she didn't really know what to say (young vet not long out of college i'd say).

sit her over a small square bale of straw to get her used to standing

I had a calf last year with a similar problem. he wasn't a hard pull, but we had to resusitate him after he was born by hanging him off a gate to let the airways clear. I fed him for a week on a bottle and he was able to stand on his front feet but couldn't put the back feet under him. Got the vet to have a look at him and he reconed he had a trapped nerve. Said he would probably never walk and left us an injection to put him down.

Luckily after a further week he started to get up (with a bit of help from us a few times a day) for a suck and hop around on 3 legs. He's still hopping around the place and doing very well, able to get up and down on his own. But I do worry that if he gets too heavy, he will not be able to get up, so I will have to be ready to slaughter him then. He will be my steak for next christmas dinner!!!!

when ever i ask the vet about a sick calf the first thing they give you is a vitamin injection, dont know what it is as they always give you the syringe but seems to help calfs alright, its like a dream to me that i remember someone talking about a calf that wouldnt straighten their legs and the advice was to strap a potato behind the joint of the leg (knee)..like i say i cant quite remember but it was something like that, not sure what the potato was supposed to do, maybe it was simply for support

Did he get caught at the hips?
The ball and socket joints(stifle joint) in the hips get weak and the nerves get damaged...If the problem is in one leg he'll be alrite, just walk with a limp
    which i imagine it is..
