This year will see one of the most exciting Amateur Golf tournaments to be held in the West of Ireland for many years. For the 1st time ever we have three of the most highly rated Links Golf courses available for 3 days of exciting golf in mid July.

Since the idea was first mooted in 2009, players from all parts of Ireland, the UK, Europe and the USA have been awaiting the details for this event. Just looking at the resume for each of the 3 clubs makes this competition such a mouthwatering prospect.

    Belmullet; Co. Sligo & Enniscrone;

(Click on their respective links above for full Club details)

For many golfers familar with links Golf, getting to play any of these three links is a fantastic experience, now they can get to play all three in a competition.

Briefly the Competition details / Rules are as follows:

Tournament Type: Amateur (official club Handicap of 20 or less)
    Venues: Carne, County Sligo, Enniscrone

    Tournament Dates: 12/13/14 July
Entry Fee: €125 / £115stg per person Host Club Members €65
    €375 / £345 per team

    Competition Type: Stableford System

Team size: 3 players (If a player is a single entrant, the committee will allocate other similar entrants to make up a team)

The winning team will be the team returning the highest aggregate points total over the 3 rounds. There will be additional individual daily prizes on each course.

A current handicap certificate must be submitted
(fax/email from a Club secretary will be allowed) and each player must carry a current handicap certificate on each day of the Tournament.

Contact any of the Host Clubs for further information.

God I would love to play in this but unfortunately its midweek and I have to keep my holidays for my wedding in september:(. I would imagine the uptake would be massive and if the weather behaved itself it would be better than a week in Portugal imo

That actually is a fair point!

There's a very good reason for not ringing him, I'm playing a friendly match against him later this year, and I suspect he's playing more golf than he let's on, he never tells me what his handicap is so this was away to find out how well he's playing.

There's two of us interested in playing this. I'm actually a distance member of Carne. Hearing up there for the last ten days of the month to play hopefully loads of times on the course.

Scrubber, whereabouts are you playing? I'm off 14 and my mate is off 10. Could perhaps make up a team?

Is there much of a takeup from posters here for the event?

Scrubber, I'm gonna talk to mary in the office up there and see can I get the members rate to enter. If she obliges then I'm gonna enter myself and my mate so will give u a shout. Wont know til end of the month.

Never played Enniscrone or Rosses Point. Might go up there for a round on each before the competition. Carne is incredible tho to be honest.

    hi bailey,
yeah carne is my favorite course anywhere. Played enniscrone a few times too but never sligo. enniscrone is really nice and difficult but there are a few holes that i think let it down. Nothing can compare to the back 9 in belmullet though.

defo mike. but sure it is bound to blow at some stage. The final presentation is in Enniscrone which worked out perfectly for me. 3 rounds in 30s would make me happy.
Kev are you taking the campervan on the road again?

    Weather looking goodish so far.
What do people think the scoring will be like on 3 tough courses over the 3 days? Was think for the team event a average of 80 points would be very close to winning and the singles maybe 3 34's.
Also are there many event's like this on, someone mentioned one that included Loch Erne but can see anything on the Web.
    Mike

i would think the three courses will be off forward tees and all pins in centre of greens. so these courses will be playing as easy as possible not counting wind.

You will have the usual guys off huge handicaps tho that play in every one of these and i would expect to see an average of 38 points over 3 days and even probaly over the 3 players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,331 ✭✭✭mike12

Max handicap allowed is 20 so was think that would keep some of the bandits out plus 3 days off in the middle of the week you would hope that it would be serious golfers no point taking 3 days off work to try and win a small prize.
    Mike

Co sligo is having their captains prize on saturday so i imagine the course will be set up pretty difficult.
As for scores I reckon the best singles scores over the 3 days 102 and for a team score I reckon the winning score will be 280-290.
Really looking forward to it since I have our 1st round of captains prize in Ballinrobe on sunday so a nice week of golf ahead. Cant wait:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 545 ✭✭✭liam12989

Captains was on in Ennsicrone last sunday too. Three great courses so lets hope weather plays the part and should be great festival of golf!
    Where is everyone staying

Scrubber, i played Ballinrobe a couple of months ago and it is a great course, i think it is as good as Druids Glen and less than half the price. A 3 person team event with 2 to score on each hole the winning score will usually be mid 80's so was thinking 80 plus each day would be good.

I think it is a combined team score afaik according to the mail i got. Yes Ballinrobe is good but wouldn't say its as good as druids glen. Maybe as druids heath. You an play it for 15 with a member and its in great nick at the mo. Where r u playin out of

Bellewstown in Co. Meath i live in Dublin and country membership in Ballyhaunis. I though it was a great course we will call it the druids glen of the west.
Ya was wondering about the scoring not really clear will have to find out before we tee off. It was sort of advertised as a team event what will the story be with your team mates reading lines ect.
    Mike

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,215 ✭✭✭scrubber72

I would assume that reading eachothers line will not be allowed since a single competition will also be in play at the time. Just enjoy the 3 days.
Ask any questions before play on monday and good luck.
    you`ll need it.;)

Playing this also, was wondering about the format. Are the 3 members of the team playing together each day, would have siad this was a bit unusual, have played the West Coast Challenge a few times and each member would be paired with other teams. Would leaves the comp open to a bit of messing but what can you do.
