Could any of you tell me whether a '00 Yaris 1.0 VVTi would have a belt or a chain? I have been doing some googling and most of it suggests the latter, however, when I checked mine today it had what clearly looked like a belt:confused:

    Thanks.

    chain.

Only VVT-i engines I know of that have a belt are the Lexus 6 cylinder ones.

You can't usually see a timing belt on an engine (toothed belt on the side of the engine) unless you remove a cover.

Yaris's usually don't need chain replacement, although water pumps can get rattly at around 100,000 miles.

I think I must be needing a trip to Specsavers then...

Youd probably have to take off a cover to see the chain would you not?

    Autodata says timing chain.

you probably saw an alternator belt. the older ones had hydraulic power steering so could be that belt too.

Several belts to see down there but not a timing belt :)

I'm no fan of Toyotas, but they deserve respect for moving back to using chains. If only more manufacturers would follow...

Afaik all current BMWs and Mercedes use chains. Any other manufacturer out there that does not use timing belts?

Didnt BMW only make the switch back recently though?

Well I don't know much about entry level BMWs but all 5-series and 7-series have had chains for several decades afaik :)
