Cross training

Just out of curiousity...is there any people on here who have ran a marathon with more cross training than running involved in their training?

Is it possible to achieve a good time in a marathon if you rely on cross training heavily? Obviously running is the best way to train for a running race but im interested to know how much one's overall fitness can compensate for a lack of running, if that makes sense?

Once you have the long ones done and a bit of speed work there shouldnt be a problem.
    For example. Plenty do 40 mile a week with with 3 x 10s and 2x 5s..........
A long cycle, a 20 miler, a hard session with fast running, one slow running and another fast cycle would be much better. I go with the bike because its the legs i use.........Find it great for endurance.

    Yes very much
I ran 247 off serious bike training and a run of no more than 15m with an average of 30-35m per week with lots of cycling of 45-65miles

Fair play jinka, thats a seriously good marathon time. Wouldnt have thought it possible when not concentrating solely on running. Good way to protect the knees too I suppose.

Know this is an old thread but worth digging up...

ran a 2:47 marathon as well with Run Less Run Faster programme meaning a weekly mileage of 25 to 32 miles with 3 quality runs and 2 cross-training sessions ... I then did three, 30 to 40 minute hard indoor cycles on rollers...

Anyone else trained for sub 3 hour marathons in this way?
