SFIV: Are You Able to Pronounce "Abel?"

Just something I'm curious about. In the game, "Abel" is pronounced differently in different places and I'm wondering which one has stuck.

It sounds like "cable" when M. Bison says it during Abel's ending sequence.

It sounds like "cobble" when Abel is declared the winner in a vs. match.

I don't want any friendships to be destroyed over this, now.

How do you pronounce "Abel?" 15 votes

What about rhymes with Babble? That's the one the game uses!

Hmm. It sounded more like "cobble" to me when I was replaying it in my brain. Still does. Babblers should probably vote for that, since I can't change it now anyway!

It's pronounced Abel as in "able to do FADC". Thats the only real pronounciation of the name. The announcer just gets it wrong.

Like they did with balrog in super turbo when the announcer calls him "BarLog". :p

Yeah I'd pronounce it different almost every time I say it,

    Able, Ah-Bell , Ahbul ...

Tinja should know the correct pronunciation since he's french :D

Abel is a Hebrew name AFAIK

And I pronounce it like it's meant to be, like the word able in English

Yeah Kane and Abel and all that but the french might have their own way of pronouncing it just like English can sometimes give words a new pronunciation even if its from another country of origin

The game was created in Japan, so it's obviously supposed to be "Aber".

    I agree with Kiki.

    Welcome to Engrish.

As for abel, I go with able. That's how my RE teacher pronounced it and that's probably what they were going for.

I remember before the SF2 anime came out in 1994 people pronouncing Ryu as Righ-u. A lot of Americans pronounce it as Ree-u. It's actually closer to just Roo.

Glad to see that most people pronounce it correctly. I figured that, since the incorrect version would be heard most often (unless you're one of those people who obsessively compulsively passes the game over and over with Abel), it might have caught on.
