With the end of Lost fast approaching has anyone any suggestions for similar style shows or films to help ease the pain and fill the long empty evenings?
A lot of people here have mentioned Battlestar Gallactica. As someone who has never seen a single episode and knows nothing regarding the plot is it worth checking out?
The only TV show I followed anywhere near as closely as Lost was The X-Files but I'm sure you've all seen that! One suggestion I would give is the low budget "Primer" which is without doubt the greatest movie ever made about time travel.

Have you checked out Fringe? Good show. It's certainly no X-Files (or Lost), but it fills the gap nicely.

I would definitely recommend Battlestar Galactica. Fantastic show. The production values, acting and directing were really second to none. I had a lot of issues with the finale but it still provided a satisfying conclusion for the most part.

I would also recommend Farscape. Not like Lost, but it was one of the craziest, weirdest, darkest, funniest and best sci-fi shows ever made. It took a while to really get going, but once it did it was amazing. It sadly got cancelled at the end of season 4, but a mini-series wrapped things up as best it could.

I second Fringe! And Twin Peaks is another excellent show that you might like if you enjoy Lost

Oh yeah Fringe is good alright. Haven't followed it religiously and have missed episodes but it's always enjoyable when I do catch it. I watched season 1 of Twin Peaks last year and liked it (without, I have to admit, always following it!). Must check out season 2.
I'm certainly going to start into BSG as well. Looking forward to it after so many positive reports.

I tried Fringe but didnt really like it. I was hoping FlashForward would of been a good Lost replacement but it's hard to get through an episode.

I remember back in the day Lost and Prison Break were the two must-see series. They were the only two series I made sure I watched when broadcast.

Fringe started out very shaky. It does pick up substantially later on though.

Has anyone seen The Prisoner (the original one from the sixties). I've wondered if it's worth checking out. Here's what J.J. Abrams said of it:
I loved The Prisoner, which was a very odd sort of hybrid of sci-fi, mystery and character, and certainly there are elements of The Prisoner in both Alias and Lost.

Primer isn't a film. The shawshank redemption, scarface, terminator 2. Those are films. Primer is an experiment in brain-****-ology. Seriously though, nothing has confused me more than that film except maybe the sexual confusion I had after seeing a picture of Basquille in a superman t-shirt but that's perfectly understandable.

the new stargate is good.. its high buget and quite different to its predecessors, deffinatly worth checking out its just started season 2, which is amazing... but u really need see season 1 which lays down the foundations for this epic tale.

Its still in season 1, season 1.5 is what they call it nowadays when they have a huge break after 10 episodes ie Caprica aswell. Has been given the go ahead for a second season though. No shows like lost at mo,maybe next season.

Haunted was a good series. It was made in 1992 I think and stars Matthew Fox (Jack from Lost). They showed it recently on the Sci-Fi Channel, and I think they're still repeating it. It was cancelled after 11 episodes though so it's a bit hard to enjoy when you know it will never finish up.

I though Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles was great. I recently bought a DVD boxset of the first (and possibly only) two series.

There's also Tru Calling, Medium and Quantum Leap. The first series of Ghost Whisperer was pretty good but the second series onwards has being getting progressively worse.

I think Fringe is ten times better than Lost. It's by the same writers and it looks like they actually have some idea of where they're going with the story. It also stars the bald black actor from Lost (I don't know his real name).

Gotta give kudos to all the Fringe lovers here. What a fantastic show, and will definately keep me happy after Lost is, well lost to TV history.

The latest episodes of Fringe have been excellent and it's running towards the end of the second season now here (3e & Sky1) with Season 3 due to air in September i think. I think the reason i got into Fringe in the first place was beacase JJ Abrams did such a good job with Lost that I thought I had to check it out.

I'd recommend people to get the Season 1 boxset of Heroes. It was a great Sci-Fi series, but anything after Season 1 wasn't half as good.

    This explains Primer very nicely:

Not exactly bedtime reading but it cleared up the areas I didn't get from the movie regarding the second and third iterations of the characters :pac:

A write-up in the Guardian suggests that Happy Town will be the new Lost. Only the last time I heard that it was the incredibly stupid Flash Forward.

    Sounds like Twin Peaks.

I dunno, I think we're going to have several years of everything being labelled the "new Lost". I really thought Heroes would be it, but oh my how that show imploded.

Someone mentioned The Prisoner on the thread. I caught the remake of it last year and twas a pretty good match albeit very trippy at times

Anyone who hasn't seen Twin Peaks, I can't recommend it highly enough to you. It's the closet thing you will get to Lost. It has a great cast of characters, great dialogue, a murder mystery as the main plot with loads of cool sub plots, weird surreal stuff going on, it's really funny at times, and it has a haunting soundtrack.
Has anyone seen The Prisoner (the original one from the sixties). I've wondered if it's worth checking out. Here's what J.J. Abrams said of it:
Yeah I watched it a few years ago. The first few episodes are good, but after a while it becomes repetitive, and the series finale is just an embarrasing mess. Worth checking out the first episode or two at least.

Saw an ad for that remake the other day, think it's coming to one of BBC or ITV soon, didn't realise it was out since last year. Must check it out. Trippy is good :)

God, have never seen anything like the decline of Heroes after season one. It's like it's written by 12y olds.
Although I think we just put up with a lot of the bad dialog and script writing in Season one because it was new and fun.

Just got it the other day. I saw it when I was a kid. I remember loving it and can't wait to start into it again.

The Prisoner is very off the wall and certainly worth checking out, if a bit dated now. it was certainly ahead of its time.

As for something replacing Lost - I think we'll be waiting a long time for anything approaching it to come along (although in a couple of months we'll all probably be saying wasn't that the biggest load of cr*p ever with such a bad ending!!)

And just for my own two cents.

If you're only looking for things like lost I'm not sure what I could suggest. BSG is absolutely brilliant (last series sucked a little bit, but awesome overall), but it's not really like lost.

If you're just looking for good series let me know and I'll recommend a few others.

Just any well written shows with a sci-fi or paranormal element :pac:

I recommend Jericho if you havent seen it. It was cancelled on its second season a few years ago, and fans werent pleased. Great show.

It centers on the residents of the fictional town of Jericho, Kansas in the aftermath of nuclear attacks on 23 major cities in the USA.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

I second Jericho - short lived, but fantastic...

Couldn't get into Fringe at all... Gonna start Battlestar Galactica once everything finishes for the summer...

There is nothing out there really I love Dexter & Breakiing bad which are well worth watching, didn't really like Fringe to much like X-Files gave up watching it half way through season 1. I don't think that gap will be filled when Lost finishes which to me was the TV show of a lifetime, Its going to be real emotional watching the last episode :(

    all stargates.

most star treks (never liked dsg).

dr who getting a lotta love - personaly seen maybe bits of old old series so cant say really.

heroes also got a lotta love - again have not seen.

That new one where the whole world blacks out for a minute is supposed to be epic.

but stargate had 214 and two(3? - original?) films - atlantis has 100 eps and universe is about 12 eps in.

so your looking at nearly 200 hours of epicness right there.

star treks - years. doctor who - decades.

You mean DS9? Damn, that was the best Star Trek series. Well, maybe not as good as TOS, but better than TNG. And I loved TNG.

Someone should also mention Babylon 5. Productions values, dialogue and acting often left something to be desired, but the story and 5 year arc was amazing. The end of the season 3 finale remains one of my favourite tv moments.

    • Stargates - completely agree epic
    • Star Treks - all are epic (although I never watched Enterprise so can't comment on that one)
    • Dr. Who - amazing
    • Heroes - Season 1 = pretty awesome... Season 2 onwards = Jumped the Shark (don't bother)
    • FlashForward - a load of crap... watched about 5 episodes, giving it a chance - wasted 4-5 hours of my life, that I'll never get back... avoid at all costs...

Some great shows to recommend and hopefully help to fill the void when LOST eventually finishes.

    1. Sopranos
    2. Six Feet Under
    3. The Wire
    4. Dexter

I know most people will have seen these, but I'm amazed how many people I come across who haven't.

Watch The Lost Room for a quick fix of quirky parnormalish detectivery.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,484 ✭✭✭username123

Firefly - drastically short livespan though - only 1 season ever made, but there is a movie too - many loose ends not cleared up though - why oh why was it canned?

The original BBC Survivors (and the remake), the original lost it after season 2, but was really good up to that.

The original Day of the Triffids - classic drama.

Dollhouse, another Joss Whedon offering, bit sketchy to begin with but I enjoyed season 1 overall.

I have Jericho but havent watched it yet - glad to hear it commended on this thread though.

That is such a great list! Any of those are worth rewatching. I was thinking of starting back with the Sopranos.

I've just started Twin Peaks and I'm loving it. IMO the precursor of all these wonderful box sets. I was a great fan of the series on TV years ago. I love the way there are so many stories and subplots, and the red herrings. Cherry pie anyone?

So much to watch, so little time...

It's already been suggested, but I can't recommend Dollhouse enough. The first 4 or so episodes are very slow moving but after that it picked up dramatically. Such a shame it was cancelled after its second season. It was criminally underrated, brilliantly written and full of fantastic plot twists.
