Have had trouble getting a replacement engine for my Volvo S40. Have tried all breakers, dealers etc in south and NI but nothing going. Am going to send it to the company that run the website www.reconditioned-engines.co.uk - The Engine Center - and just wondering if anyone has any experience with them, good (hopefully) or bad?

It would cost an absolute fortune on shipping.

Whats wrong with your own engine ???

Over-heated a few months back (burst water pipe). They're charging £200 for collection and delivery once it is done so not too bad. Cheapest option out there. Buying from volvo would cost thousands

But what damage was done is it just a head gasket or is the bores damaged have you had someone look at it or how do you know that you need a new engine.

Your method sounds very drastic to me.

Have you tried any of the engine reconditioners in Ireland not sure what part of the country you are in but I use Gala engineering in Dunshaughlin Co Meath for any of my reconditioning work.

By the way what S40 is it if its the 1.9 I know that Kilcock car dismantlers had an engine cos I got the turbo off it.

It's the head gasket, but my mechanic thinks the engine is damaged too - I'm not sure on the exact detail but my brother knows the mechanic and knows about engines so am happy that it needs to be done.. haven't tried gala, will give them a shout in the morning, cheers

Its your money but if I was doing that job I would tell you wether or not it needed an engine you would have to give it a serious roasting to warrant replacing the whole unit did your mechanic even take the head off the engine ?

yeah he took the head off and said I'd need a new engine, unfortunately it got a serious roasting, probably around 30 or 40 miles without any water in it

I have nearly the same problem.Engine use too much oil.Compression test says low compression in 2 cilinders.
I would like tell some key things. For people who try save money.
    1) Nobody never does not sell good car on second hand places.First car will offered to family members, friends. If this car realy good.If this car not good.Car will sold on auctions, internet,or to second hand cars dillers.Last ones, usaly buy cars from auctions. They "Bring" them back to "life" and try make proffit on them.
    2) Never buy used engine for replacement to your car.Today you will happy, tomorow, you know you self.As some people says,I not so rich to buy cheap stuff twice.
    3) Dont try sell your car and buy another used one.Even if you have problem just with engine.Do not worry.Every used car has problems. If not with engine, you will have replace shocs, springs, and ,....When you buy second hand car you will have change timing belt imediatly. This will cost you 300-450 euros.Does not mather what diller says.
    4) Dont play with buy- sell,buy-sell.Becouse its waste of money.Buy one car.Bring this car back to life properly and you will use this car 5 years minimum without any problems.Even if you sell your cheap car for 1 000 euros, and buy another for 5 000 euros.Thinking about newer car will have no problems ( read from top again ).For 4 000 euros difference you could make perfect car from your car what cost 1000 euros. And probably you will have better car than you gona buy for 5000 euros.
    5) If you have problem with engine try find good specialists on remanufactured or reonditioned engines. But never buy used one.

P.S.No bad cars in this world.Just too much people does not take proper care of them cars. And too much mechanics who cant properly fix them.Car is like horse. You should feed this horse properly, take care properly, and bring to good doctor when horse has problem.
