    Hi guys,

I've spent all weekend trying to figure out a way of getting an iphone without switching networks, i even went up to Newry to purchase a pre-pay but they refused to sell one to me as i'm not a uk resident. Anyway it's back to the drawing board....

I'm just wondering if the iPhones on Vodafone are now locked to Vodafone, i just remember that at the start they were unlocked iPhones. Or if they are locked has any heard from Vodafone of any details of the requirements to get them unlock (ie the way with o2 you have to spend €150 on credit until they will unlock it)

There should be no reason why you cannot buy an iphone on prepay in the UK. I got a 3G and a 3GS from an O2 store over the last 18 months, never any questions asked. You can then unlock an O2 one for just £15 (make sure you buy at least a £20 topup with it as you cannot topup with an irish credit card!).

As for the VF phones, Apple's database of operators say that they 'should' be locked, and Vodafone has published unlocking criteria on their forum (if I remember correctly, after 18 month contract has expired if Pay Monthly, or a minimum topup of €127 on prepay) for the iPhone.

However, as you quite rightly said, had you taken advantage of a pre-release through IOS, these handsets are factory unlocked. :)

In Newry they refused to sell me an iPhone as i'm not a uk resident!!! Pain in the butt!!! Especially since i had been onto o2 uk customer service and there was never any mention about this rule!

How do they know that you are not? Do they look for proof of address on prepay?

It sounds like bollox though, no reason for it on prepay. Are you sure you just didnt get some asshole of a sales assistant?

Got it in both the carphone warehouse and the o2 shop. both refused to sell it to me unless i had either a creditcard registered to a uk address or a valid uk drivers license. Was extremely annoyed, especially as it was the only reason i went to Newry on saturday
