I have a 1.4 petrol 306 every morning i have to jump it off another car to start it or if it is late at night(after10pm). The battery is good it has a green light on it to say it is charged and i used to spanners also to see if it had power there was good sparks off it. Could the problem be the starter?

Something draining the battery possibly try letting down the rear seat and see is the boot light staying.

Really sounds like something is draining the battery, or the battery is just screwed, you might make sparks but that dosen't indicate it's good enough to start the car. Did you install anything recently like a new radio or the like?

Any one of those could be causing your problem to be honest your looking for a needle in a haystack if you dont know what you are doing.

Try disconnecting those after market items and see does it cure your problem then you could reconnect them one by one to find what causes your problem.

How exactly are you determining that the battery is good?

It may need to be load tested to determine this. A voltmeter will not be enough, nor will a light on a battery charger.

How old is the battery? If more than 5 years (with the weather we have been having, and given that you say that your accessories have been installed for a year), I would seriously suspect a worn out battery.

i got a new battery last week and it is starting fine again. The battery was in a car my brother bought 6 years ago and the battery wasn't new then so I think that was the problem. Thanks for yer help

Glad you got it sorted :)

Typical battery life is 3-5 years, so you did quite well with yours. I had a battery last 10 years in my previous car, although the last year it needed to be jumped regularly (car off the road most of the time didn't help)

Glad a new battery sorted you out! Just wanted to point out that the 'green light' you saw on the old battery only indicates the condition of a single cell (the battery has six cells), so you can't really rely on that.

Does that "green light" not just indicate electrolyte level?

Dont ever use a spanner to cross the terminals of a car battery or anything for that manner. Car batteries have a habit of exploding without warning when there are sparks about. I know a lad who has severe facial burns and lost sight in one eye as a result of crossing the terminals with a spanner.
