    Can someone explain the benefits of using either of these gun types? I always take an assault rifle and find that they do the trick over a variety of ranges. Enlighten me please!

    I am no expert on the game itself but this is how I see it.

    SMG's: They are great for rushing people because of their high mobility. The problem is though they don't have much power so the majhority of the tgime they are outclassed by the assault rifles in a one on one straight firefights. They aren't great for long distances but can killl quicker than nearly everything in the game in short distances because of their high rate of fire. The SMG's do have a fair bit of recoil over long range but that can be solved by burst firing.
    I recommend the UMP45 because it has the most power out of all the SMG's.

    LMG's: LMG's have the most ammo out of all types of guns in MW2 and are great for spamming the trigger down a corridor full of bad guys :p As they are very heavy you cannot go running around the whole map with them or go rushing into spawns for the simple fact that you run slower with them. They are good for mostly medium-long range but will do the trick if you run into a enemy close by. One thing about LMG's is that their accurcy isn't great with is why I always use the grip attachment with them.
    I'd recommend the RPD or the AUG because of their power and best accurcy out of all the LMG's.

    SMGs are great for really tight maps like Favela, work fantastic at medium range but you do lose a fair bit at long range, but with a Marathon, Lightweight, Commando class they're awesome, my favourite SMG is the P90, it works really well, 50 round clip and you're fast enough moving around with it equipped.

    LMGs are great for Anti-Air classes, say you run out of Stinger ammo or Javelin ammo (or for the earlier ranks, you fire your 1 AT4-HS rocket and miss, they're really good for shooting down enemy air support, not that good at long range but the 100-round clip is a bonus. However, my favourite LMG is the AUG H-Bar, it's got less rounds in a clip than the other LMGs but it's by far the most accurate, works really well at over medium range but under long range, but up close it's a bit useless really.

    What you're best off doing is trying each weapon of both types out and seeing which ones you prefer

    Stopping power and the ump45 or p90 are good, i got 4 kill in a second or 2 as i shot(p90) up the bomb diffuses.
    the ump tend to get longer range kill (against me) than i'd like.

    Use an RPD with grip, lethal. Great range, great power and limited recoil

    Smgs are handy for small to medium maps in domination/demolition/snd/ctf/ffa/tdm/hq.

    Lightweight Marathon and Commando hell ye !! O.o
    Most advanced people use SMGs. UMP kills with 2 bullets with stopping power or not and 3 bullets with compressor. People that can aim properly and have high accuracy can easily take out Assault rifle from the distance.

    Assault are the best anyway for people just starting off but they are not fun to use and slow.

    LMGs are really horrible in this game only RPD caught my eye. You got to remember tho always use grip on LMG and try not holding the button just tap it very fast it helps accuracy and its widespread.

    Assault : Tar 21 its like SMG but more powerfull but you got to know how to play it. Otherwise ACR with no recoil at all.

    SMG : MP5K for very short range UMP for normal range Vector for any range but abit unsure weapon to use.

    LMG : RPD with the grip.

    yeah if your going for an lmg id take the aug find that the range and accuracy is unreal with the iron sights so you can use the empty slot from the red dot/holographic for something more useful like a silencer or grip
