    Thinking of upgrading to the new shiny new ubuntu during the week but I've been hearing conflicting reports on the interwebs and ubuntus own website on weather the Nvidias own binary drivers work or not....

    so is anyone using the 190.53 drivers and lucid? (sucessfully :P)

    Known issues

    As is to be expected at this stage of the release process, there are several known bugs that users are likely to run into with Ubuntu 10.04 Beta 1. We have documented them here for your convenience along with any known workarounds, so that you don't need to spend time reporting these bugs again:

    Because of the new alternatives system used for nvidia driver packages, the nvidia installer from NVIDIA's website currently doesn't work.

    But conflicting reports here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1353082
    :mad::confused:

    Why not just stick with 9.10? 10.04 isn't considered 'unstable' for no reason. The Nvidia blob drivers will always cause some pain for maintainers, as they are not open source which can cause problems with dynamic library updates. Move to 10.04 with closed GLX support when a stable version is released. If it ain't broke, dont fix it ;)

    Why not just install them manually from the nVidia site? The only downside is that you'll have to reinstall them when a kernel update comes along, but it should satisfy you until the release is official.
    cd ~ && wget http://uk.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/190.53/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.53-pkg1.run
    sudo service gdm stop

    That'll take you to a black screen with a bash prompt.
    Then login and run (accepting all the prompts of the former)
    cd ~ && sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.53-pkg1.run
    startx    # when it's done

    I don't use Ubuntu myself, but the 190.53 driver downloaded from the nVidia site worked fine against the 2.6.32 kernel for me (same version Lucid has).

    ^ yea i'm well able to do that :)

    Turns out ubuntu 10.04 wont boot at all. GDM is giving me all corrupt video output and Ubuntu in all their infinite wisdom have removed the "low graphics" mode from their installer. And the Xorg.conf file :mad:

    Talk about one step foward and two back.

    No amount of boot arguments will make a difference eg. vga=711 or xforce=vesa...

    Does booting to recovery mode and running dpkg-reconfigure gdm, have any effect of interest?
