Ok so I placed an accumulator across a number of sports with two football teams, rugby and horse racing. I chose to do one of the horses e/w as the price was 16-1, how do I calculate the possible returns and do I still win if the horse places ?

You can't put an each way horse selection in with football teams..not quite sure how that will be settled to be honest. I reckon the win part will stand and the place part voided

Never done it before but if it still stands, you'll probably be settled on any of the bets that have each-way terms, i.e., just the Racing bets

You've two bets. A bet on every selection to win.
And a bet on the horse to place, and the other selections to win as usual.
So, you'll get a 1/4 or whatever of the odds on the horse, and all the other odds will be the same

All your bet's will be win only... as you cannot put an ew bet in with an accumulator unless it is possible to do all selections ew.... ie if it was all horses or dogs, or maybe mixed in with golf or something similar. Football and rugby are win only, unless you use extra markets, but that would have to have been stated on the the bet in the original instance.

I don't think you are right there fortune, how do you break up the bet? If say the person has 6 selections, 5 football teams and one horse which he chose (or so he thought) to be ew within the one bet how is that bet broken up if the customer stakes say €5? If all selections won the customer would be paid out at the full accumulator for the prices.. it's impossible to give each way within an accumulator of this type...

If you have online for any of the bookmakers, try to do a bet as Scooby has described, it would be impossible to get the system to accept that bet, it would only accept a win bet....... therefor win only!
