So with all the talk of drink, glug glug glug.

I wonder do viewers have a right to complain to the BAI about the broadcast of this match on Setanta Sports 1????

How does the IRFU or the competition organizers feel about the fact that it was place on the less well received channel?

Was the match shown on S4C?

All those poor UPC viewers having to pay to watch a game of rugby. Anyone on satellite has to pay for both Setanta Ireland and Setanta Sports 1.

no the match wasn't shown in the UK as far as I know. Don't think there's any grounds for complaints because as rights holder Setanta have the right to put the game on either Setanta Ireland or Setanta Sports 1.

I'm surprised they don't put the bigger games on Setanta Ireland as they can charge more for advertising given the wider availability and in turn should pick up higher ratings than normal and be able to turn around and say to future potential advertisiers, look at our ratings. They missed the boat for me by sticking the game on Setanta 1, I'd be amazed if their viewing figures even broke 20000.

The rugby supporters tend not to have the GAA supporters style hissy-fit when a game is on a non terrestrial channel.

Setanta paid for the rights and it is up to them to do as they see fit with their purchase.

Why is it a pity, isn't it better for fans to see as much as possible on free to air tv ?
I assume rte/tg4 made a better offer than setanta for next year.

A damn shame that the Magners League will be seen by a wider audience?

Sure you never know TV3 might be interested in it.

Anyway has the TG4/RTÉ rights deal been confirmed?
The rugby supporters tend not to have the GAA supporters style hissy-fit when a game is on a non terrestrial channel.

No they just want to insure that Heineken Cup is part of the Governments list of FTA sporting events.

While they have been strong their last few years of decision making have been pretty abysmal.

Anyone know how many subscribers Setanta Sports have?

TV3 have some experience in this regard. They did a great job when they showed the rugby world cup back in 2007! tongue.gif

With help from their friends in Setanta. And they will get to do it again in 2011 AFAIK, if Setanta survives.

I am sure ITV HD will trump anything they try.

Are Sky Sports and ESPN in the running for the rights?

A story to that effect was in the Sunday Business Post last October - but Celtic Rugby never officially announced anything. So we don't know for certain what's happening next season.

Whether it being on TG4 would actually mean increased viewers would depend how willing more casual viewers would be to put up with commentary in Irish.

I've said it before - Setanta do not have enough material to keep two sports channels going. If they lose the Magners League they will bearly have enough material to keep ONE sports channel going. Sure there is the odd clash but it isn't too often.

Sport on TG4 generally attracts upwards of 100,000 viewers. I know of one person who wouldn't have been the biggest Irish Language fan that was upset by TG4 loss of rights to Setanta, their family were in an area of the country with no access to Pay TV.

Sport = International Language :) At least so I have been told.

I for one will put up with Irish language commentary and no doubt many other rugby fans up here in the North who can't speak the language will too. Even before red button English language facility on S4C I rarely missed their coverage of Celtic League matches. NI is awash with aerials that can pick up both RTE and TG4 and if report is correct re RTE/TG4 there will surely be many more viewers tuning in to Celtic League coverage than Setanta had.

Same here in the south east. The language barrier is never an issue for sport.

I would say that the IRFU feel rich - they sold the rights! It may be great for the coffers of the IRFU but whether its great for the country is another thing.

They would sell their grannies unless someone steps in to say sorry you cant do it.

On the language issue of sports on TG4, the weekend before last saw 600,000 viewers tune in for the finals of the Allianze GAA football league with an average of 220,000 tuning in to the Division 1 final making TG4 the most watch TV station that afternoon.
