No Slane this year

Lord Henry Mountcharles revealed this morning that they've been unable to find suitable headliners.

There’s bad news for Slane fans with Lord Henry Mountcharles appearing on RTÉ Radio One’s Marian Finucane Show this morning to announce that there will be no gig this year.

Mountcharles had previously said that he was planning to run the 2010 event on August 28 subject to himself and MCD finding the right headliner.

Lord Henry denied reports that he’d been in talks with Sir Paul McCartney, only to be knocked back by the former Beatle who’s playing the RDS in June for rival promoters Aiken Promotions.

Acknowledging the Facebook campaign to bring Kings Of Leon to Slane, he revealed that they’re one of the acts on his shopping-list for 2011, which will be the 30th anniversary of him running concerts, and his own 60th birthday.

In other interesting asides, the Slane boss said he’d turned down the opportunity to have Bon Jovi headline in 2005, and to stage a second concert last year headlined by AC/DC.

I heard him on Marian Finucane waffling on about how great a venue Slane is. It's possibly one of the worst venues I've ever been to.
It's more akin to an assault course. You have to walk for two hours down a dirt track trying to avoid being started on by other grumpy punters. If there's any bit of drizzle the entire amphitheater turns into a giant muck slide. Then when the concert is over it takes four hours to get out of the place.
Last time I went I slid past my friends and had to walk ten minutes back up the poxy hill to get to them. Funny at the time but not what you want to go through when you're trying to enjoy a concert. I betcha if Mountcharles had to endure what the average punter had to endure he wouldn't think so highly of his 'wonderful venue'.

It is a great venue though.

That's like saying that the O2 is a load of **** because I got caught up in a huge traffic jam trying to get there and then it started lashing rain while I was standing in the queue to get in leaving me soaked for the entire night.

Yeah but unlike the O2 you have that 2/3 hour walk on top of the 3 hour traffic jam. Any way it takes about an hour to walk to the O2 from Stephen's Green.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a regular festival goer and I can enjoy myself in the worst of conditions. I had a good time at Slane but it's far from the amazing venue every one thinks it is. It's more about the prestige of the place than any thing else. It has history.
Back when Dylan played at it there wasn't much else going on but, compared to what we have today it's a terrible venue. They haven't raised their standards to match the current standard. At EP last year they had tractors with trailers ferrying people to and from the car parks. At any other venue food and drink are easy to come by and it's easy to get to the place with out feeling like you've gone through basic training.

Its a god awful venue, absolutely terrible, delighted its not on this year.. now hopefully anyone decent that would have been playing in that kip will play somewhere more suitable/accessible.

This fills me with motivation to start a new Facebook campaign because the Kings of Leon are f*cking dire. But who to suggest? Was thinking NMH but that just wouldn't happen. Would Tom Waits grace us with another visit despite those ridiculous ticket prices? Howbout The Flaming Lips? Thom Yorke has played a few shows in the US, any fear of him coming to Europe?

    Gorillaz would be deadly..

Do we really need another Facebook group? No.

    It's tricky alright.

Radiohead are big on public transport and all, and as stated, Slane is pretty nightmarish in that regard. Gorillaz would be cool, but I don't think they're mainstream enough. Kings of Leon would be mainstream enough, but blow. Flaming Lips is a nice idea.

It's funny, bands just don't get big enough to make the contenders as obvious as they would be a decade or so ago.

Arcade Fire should have a new LP for 2010/11 yes? If so, I'm going with it.

Also, I don't know how Gorillaz' hologram show on a stage like Slane would fail to sell. I mean, it would be the best event for gange EVER.

Arcade Fire would rock my tiny mind and I'd crawl to Slane if they were on, yeah. But their next one is due this summer, I'd have thought if they were an option they'd be on this year?

It's mostly this bit that stands out for me you see. Have they released a new album this year? I haven't heard bugger all about one.

I was there in 81 for U2 and Thin Lizzy. 82 for Stones, and a few other concerts there as well. Ive had some of the best days and nights of my life there.

At the end of the 81 there was fork lightening at the back of the stage. The gods love the place too. The place has such energy its invigorating and makes me feel so alive.

It has ancient woodlands surrounding the place and the Feng shui of the Boyne passing by. I would walk five miles to get there. What an amazing unique venue.

Was the music too loud for you as well as the muck?

The damage done by the Oasis gang probably did this years event in, the last thing we need is another Oasis and it's fans, which is exactly what we'll get if KOL play... Slane needs to avoid the kids and get the likes of Springsteen, The Who, McCartney, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen or Bowie to play.. but it'll be U2 and we all know it

If David Bowie ever plays live again, I'll eat a space-unicorn. Would be awesome though.

A Radiohead, Flaming lips, Arcade Fire combo would be amazing. I'd go to Helmand Province to see that.

Can't believe Arcade Fire are playing Oxegen. Have you seen the line up? That will be a war zone. It's not really a rock festival any more.

Not loud enough if any thing, which is another problem. You can't really hear any thing at the top of the hill.
Like I said, I had a good time at Slane but, compared to what we have today it doesn't match up. I betcha if the good lord himself (no, the one that owns Slane) had to endure what his customers had to endure, Slane wouldn't be such a frequent event. I'd love to see him goin' on his arse down that hill.

I think there's a butchers in Rathfarnham that sells unicorn steak. Not sure about space-unicorn though, might be a special order.

It would probably take a considerable feat of diplomacy to negotiate Flaming Lips and Arcade Fire onto the same double-bill, but it would be just perfect.

Oxegen, to be fair to it, was always kind of a grab-bag of whatever big names came to hand. It happened to be rock, mainly, and I suppose it advertises itself as a rock and roll weekend, but it doesn't really have any character of it's own, you know?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 237 ✭✭DeBunny

Yeah, it's always been uber commercial. The Ryan Air of festivals.
The ''rock and roll weekend'' thing is just becoming more and more ironic though. Was it the Saturdays that played last year?

Nowt wrong with Oexegen having a few pop acts playing every year.

The problems with the festival lies elsewhere imo.
