It was mentioned there on the "today's news" thread..

Vince is retiring his heel character!? :( This is bad news.. he's PROBABLY the best heel I have ever seen. He doesn't make a good face in my opinion. Truly an end of an era.

What do you guys think of it?

He is retireing his character full stop, not just a heel as far as I know. Which is good news.

Its gotten to the stage that:

    1. He had feuded with just about everyone worth feuding with.

    2. He's just too old to keep getting in the ring time and time again.

    3. He was going to get stale if he kept up the same old schtick over and over.

    4. He probably just wants a quiet life.

I know that it does make sense.

    All this change though...

Shawn, Vince...even Khali!! I can't deal with it!

Hardly the worst news today to be honest, plus what else is left for his character to do??

i dont know, i reckon his character could have helped some of the new stars. in some form or another. Mcintyre especially.

i can see him still being on screen in some capacity in the future for sure, which will happen until he dies imho.. But as far as wrestling he has to be finished, he must be older than both Hogan and Flair at this stage

The Wrestling Observer is reporting that the match between Bret Hart and Vince McMahon at WrestleMania 26 might have been the "blow off" to the Mr. McMahon character on TV. The report is noting that Vince's intentions at this point are to be through with the character, which is why the match was booked to have McMahon beaten so badly by Bret Hart. As always, things can change, but at this point Vince has no plans to continue with the Mr. McMahon character on TV.

Its a pity his last match was such a shambles with Bret

With Swagger, Sheamus, Ziggler, McIntyre and what not on the rise. Transitionary period on the way for WWE methinks!

To be honest, I thought the WWE has been in a transitionary period for the last 5 or so years.

Can't say I'm sad to see the end of the Mr McMahon character. Although I do suspect we'll see it every once in a while.

The thing is, McMahon is still probably the greatest heel in wrestling.

Get him back commentating I say, would be a million times better than Michael Cole, I wanna hear vince say "un-BEE-LEE-VABUL!" again :D

Try watching some old tapes with him commentating, its fecking painful to listen to him.

Great heel, greatest ever, possibly, but he certainly had the greatest pro wrestling feud.......with Ted Turner in the late 90s etc. And his feud with Austin was not to shabby either.

God no he was terrible. "What a move!"

He was bad enough to be funny, I would like JR and Vince commentating on RAW.

TBH, I think it's the right time. He is an excellent heel, but WWE is relatively well stacked in that dept.

He is a bit too old to be in the ring (even though I think he was very good in the role he played) and the character has kinda gone full circle with him getting his come-uppance at WM. Yeah, it's a shame his last match wasn't as good as it should have been. But hey, that's no reason to invest yet more TV time in an afterthought storyline.

I'd fully expect him to stay behind the scenes at least until Linda McMahon is either secure or done with politics. Who they'll use as an on-air authority figure is an interesting question with Linda away, Shane having quit, and Stephanie raising the kids. Too much to hope for Bret to be brought in?

I could see the likes of Flair being brought in as a GM

Shawn maybe? He was fantastic when he was the commissioner.

Shawn would be great - he's still mega-over, did a decent job as a de-facto part of the booking team in the day, and has history with a lot of people on the roster. Crucially, it would also be a lighter working schedule for him. Regal, perchance to dream - would be very good, but is less likely than Shawn. I'd say it'll be a cold day in hell before they let Flair near a WWE ring again, though.

I'm crossing my fingers and praying for something off-the-wall like Cornette, Heyman, or Ted Dibiase (sr) - though I doubt that would happen. If I were a betting man, I'd say Shawn will get the gig.

I think he should go back to commentating, to be honest, he was never a good character and he could job to someone but rarely fight back in any manner...I think that he should admit he has reached the age now where he is to leave wrestling to the professionals (oh, and his son:D)

After his big sendoff there is not a hope that he will appear on our Television screens anytime soon. I know he only retired as a wrestler. But he said goodbye to all the fans, to ignore that and come back a few weeks or months later would be stupid. I'm sure we will see Shawn again, but it wont be within the next 12 months.

He definetly shouldn't go back to commentating. Listen to him and Jesse Ventura calling the Battle Royale on Raw which Sheamus won and started his push. He was awful in it. "What a maneuver":(

Vince's character was possibly the best heel in wrestling.

They should definitely give the job to Regal. With ECW gone, there's not a lot left for Regal to do. He's a brilliant heel character though and always did a good job as Commissioner/GM. Having him as the senior authority figure is best storyline wise as he's previously played the role of Vince's 'lackey' so to speak, and was previously Commissioner in both WWE and The Alliance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,206 ✭✭✭✭Rjd2

So I an the only one who feels that heel GM'S are played out?
They could move Vicky over to Raw and let Teddy and Tiffany rule Smackdown.

What about someone like Goldust, who in fairness, has also very little to do now ECW is gone....and he's been around for a long time and is due a push according to sources

Maybe but I still dont think we will see him between now and next years Wrestlemania. I'm sure we will see him again though in some shape or form but not before then.

Goldust as GM would be ridiculous. Dustin Rhodes on the other hand might not be too bad.

I'd prefer to see Goldust become a mentor to someone. Not have the younger guy copy his gimmick or anything, but definitely keep him around somehow. I've always liked Goldust. His gimmick wouldn't suit being a full-time GM though

My personal fav was "Right in the KISSER!" or "Right in the old bread basket" that was good also.

I was just watching Unforgiven 1999 yesterday, and Austin is on commentary for most of the main event. He was actually very good. Even though he was very much in character for most of it (Main event was a six-pack challenge, he said he was going to have his own six-pack challenge :D), as a commentator he was terrific. Never happen now though, not when he's in films and stuff
