Ricky Gervais - obsession with weight?

Ricky Gervais has likened "fat people" to heroin addicts.

The comedian declared that he has no sympathy for overweight people because it is their "own fault" for having such a poor diet.

Gervais told GQ: "Well, it's their fault they're fat. They ate too much. Those are the rules. I got fat because I ate too much. I knew why I was getting fat. I didn't think I had a tumour up my backside. I thought it was because I ate cheese and pizza every f**king night.

"I knew what I was doing. So there's no point going round feeling sorry for them. It wasn't a trick. It's like dealing with smackheads. We've got to stop them."

The 48-year-old went on to say that although he understands how difficult it is to lose weight, he still enjoys using large people as the basis for his humour.

Gervais added: "I do a new routine where I say, 'I don't want to make any fat people feel uncomfortable, so next time, buy two seats'. Are you asking me if I hate fat people? Do I think they eat too much? They eat too much if they want to be thin. If they want to stay fat, they're eating just the right amount."
Ricky Gervais has blasted claims that he lost weight to fit in with Hollywood expectations.

Instead, the comic actor inisted that he slimmed down because he wanted to and added that he would never bow to the LA beautification norm.

Gervais, 48, told The Times: "The Hollywood pressure is that you do have to be of a certain standard or a certain type. I see everyone doing it, even good character actors. I think, 'Why are you starving yourself?' The pressure is there to have white, straight teeth..."

Asked if he would ever have his teeth whitened, Gervais said: "No, they're clean and they're real – it's so strange to me that anyone would ever think I would. If I haven't done them now, why would I do them?"

He then launched a withering tirade about the Hollywood film industry which 'angers' him because of its obsessions with image. "Who gives a f**k what anyone thinks? I don't give a f**k what they think and if I don't get a film role because my teeth are crooked, then f**k them, I don't want it," he said.

"I just go, 'It's ridiculous'. And if I don't get a film role because I'm not thin enough, then, 'F**k you. Why would I f**king do that, you f**king shallow c***t!'I hate them, and I hate that people think that I would. It makes me angry."

I don't get it, the first article suggests to me an intense dislike of overweight people, where he has absolutely no sympathy whatsoever for fat people.

Then on the other hand, the second article suggests he empathises with people and in general has an intense dislike for the pressure people are under to be physically perfect.

I think Mr. Gervais is quite messed up and has serious issues in regards to this issue.

He's mad. Something wrong with anyone who thinks they are extremely funny.

Think the difference is he is out of shape and slightly overweight, he is criticising the uber fat and super thin. Not really an obsession, and not always that funny.
