BROD Question

So my brothers PS3 was confiscated of him for being naughty and was left up in the attic. Now as we know attic's are quite cold, so he downloaded the latest update and put in MW2. It wouldn't read that or several other discs so I assume
    its the blu-ray of death?

I do have a theory though that perhaps when the cold PS3 was brought into the warm living room maybe some condensation formed on the lens? Would that be anyway possible? However when the disc is put into the drive it makes a different sound than usual, a slight popping sound.

The PS3 itself is only 4 months old so the laser couldn't have packed in already?

Sounds like the gears are messed up for the blu ray drive, possibly not a blu ray lens so all is not lost

Oh not to bad, just to tell you though that the disc does indeed go in and the circle rotates at the top right corner. So what should I do to fix it?

Contact Sony Support on this issue.

Does it read any other discs?
I got this problem and because it was in warranty I got a replacement, but later I learned that I could've taken it apart and swapped in a replacement Blu-Ray drive made specifically for the PS3.

Bring it back and let the shop sort it out, repair or replace it. If you go messing with it you will invalidate the warranty, and then your screwed if you have any further problems.

I wouldn't over emphasise the visit to the attic though!

Nope won't read any other format of disc at all.

Thing is this was a replacement one that he bought for €170 due to the older one suffering from the YLOD. So I fear he might not get a replacement due to it being 5 months old whereas as the warranty on replacement models are 3 months.

Look up online how to replace the PS3's Blu-ray drive, I'm sure you will find a suitable guide :3

Right so I rang up Sony and tbh I'm sick to death of these stupid warranties and terms.

The rep form Sony basically told me that I'm going to have to pay yet another €160 for another console, just 5 months after already paying €160 this replacement console. I asked him why they only put a 3 month warranty on these models and he basically said that was policy and that they cannot guarantee the console's life time. So he gave me yet another reference number for another PS3.

This is nothing short of extortion really, its f*cking ridiculous to spend this much on yet another PS3 that has a guarantee of only 3 months. I'm seriously considering buying a Xbox, I feel as if the PS3 is as unreliable as the Xbox.

So basically a brand new blue ray drive will be the fix?

If it's out of warranty then, you may as well order a replacement drive and fix it yourself.

Actually after further inquiries it wasn't put in the attic, but in a wardrobe on its side!

This is going to be very reasuring for anyone who has accepted or paid for a refurbished unit. Below is an e-mail I recieved from sony support when I questioned the three month warranty, probably won't do any good but may be worth quoting to them just to see.

"I hope that it will reassure you somewhat to know that our returns rates are extremely low and that this is in no way a manufacturing defect, in fact , SCEUK ran searches of its customer complaints/warranty database and also of its historic case history to identify the number of reports made to it regarding instances of system shutdown or failure in circumstances where the front panel yellow indicator is illuminated. Similarly we have analysed fault diagnostic and repair data from our service centres. The results show that of all PS3s sold in the UK Ireland to date, fewer than one half of one per cent of units have been reported as failing in circumstances where the yellow indicator is illuminated.

It is standard practice for businesses in the electronics and many other consumer products sectors to provide free servicing/repairs only during the warranty period, but to charge for Out of Warranty repairs/replacement. Most electrical productsand indeed many other products carry an industry average one year manufacturer's warranty because it is felt that one year is sufficient time for any manufacturing faults to become apparent. After this period, it is perfectly legal and reasonable charge for repairs or replacements following failure. This charge reflects the actual cost of repairing a unit to the high standard we apply and the repair cost encompasses cost of parts, labour, post & packaging. administration and VAT.

Unfortunately we are unable to waive the out of warranty fee for this exchange however though it is not SCEE procedure and we are not obliged, we are willing to offer a 12 month warranty on your replacement console as a gesture of goodwill to offer you some peace of mind. We are very confident in the overall quality and reliability of PlayStation. I hope that this helps.

    Kindest Regards,

It's gone well beyond a joke the way they are treating people at this stage. I am still in the process of trying to get a replacement for my own console at the moment. Good luck with yours.

Cheers man how did you persuade them to increase your warranty? Or is that what you did?

I didn't do any editing, I just highlighted what was pertinent. I didn't persuade them either, the extension was their idea. That is the origional wording they replied with when I questioned how confident they were in their refurbs, if that was all they were prepared to warranty them for. I did cut my name etc from the head of it.Re: customers charter

Sorry maybe I didn't phrase that well, so you basically questioned them about the reliability of the PS3 and they said it was good and explained it above with the statistics and gave you an added 12 month warranty?

Apologies if I'm not understanding you correctly!

He offered a twelve month warranty on a refurbished unit, when I questioned sony's confidence in them, if they were only prepared to offer three months warranty on them. I had already told him that I would have no confidence in a refurbished unit of the same model. The statistics were in relation to other questions I had, as regards the over all failure rates of the various models in the range, which as you can see he never clarified.
I think they are taking the piss, looking for another 160 for another refurb.

Good point, how can I expect another refurb to last if this one went only after 5 months. Tis ridiculous really, I'll have a go at emailing them. Cheers Slick50

EDIT: Could you pass me on their email?

Right so I got it sorted, kinda. After a few emails over and back Sony have offered me a PS3 free of charge. They're offering me a 60GB or a 120GB, both re-manufactured units and absolutely no warranty on either.

So which should I go for, would the 60GB be slightly less reliable than the 120GB?

Hi Flecktarn, just asked how you were getting on, on the small claims court thread before the notification for this post came in. I suppose it is some improvement, I don't know about refusing any sort of warranty either. Tough call on which to go for, I am personally doubtfull about the fats, is the 120gb a slim, if so I would go for that.

Have removed the question from other post
