    Hello,
I castrated a young bull at about 5-6 months old but ive a feeling hes not done properly so now hes 8 months and I need to squeeze him again!

He's very strong so Im wondering had anyone any technique/method where you dont get blinded with a kick?

Does anyone tie their leg or both legs?

Is there anything you can buy to protect you?

    Thanks

I'd say you should probably get the vet to cut him instead,Much easier on you and the bull,he'll stop thriving if you squeeze him,But thats only my opinion

Get someone to hold his tail straight up that will stop him from kicking.

the most danger of getting a kick is just as you close the burdizzo , messing with ropes will only annoy him more , so as sam says get some one to hold his tail straight up

To be honest I wouldn't recommend yourself doing this with the bull at all. Its said the owner of the bull should never be present when the bull is having his ring put in to the nose, because the bull is intelligent and associates the pain with its owner. There was a local man killed by his bull and was said he was there the day the bulls ring was put in and the bull turned on his owner months later- because he was vexed by it. they're strange animals and I wouldnt perform the castration of my bull myself. Like the ring he will associate the pain with those present. however you know your own bull best.

You can get him banded with a rubber ring also. If you get the vet to do him and he's old enough, he'll probably do him this way. He'll need a blackleg shot also (to cover tetanus), ideally some days (can't remember how long) before doing him.

If the tail is held up, like the guys said above, he can't kick. But it needs to help straight up, and held firmly with both hands about 6" from the top (arse side).

Some info on the tetanus risk

westlander you should get the vet to cut him. to tackle him again with the burdizzo would be too cruel. after all you made a balls!!!! of it first time around

what makes you think you will do it right this time. it will be more difficult to do with birdeezo and twice as hard on bull. get vet

I had no problems doing the other 6 it was just this one that didnt work out. He was the same age as the rest but he was a lot bigger in every way.

    Thanks for replies.

stand the opposite side to the ball you are doing, as it will kick with the leg on the same side as the ball being squeezed.
stand as close to the animal as possible, the further away you are the harder the kick will be.
don't go at it half hearted, in and out before YOU or the animal knows what is going on.;)

Is it illegal to castrate a bull of this age without the vet?
