Inglorious Basterds is excellent. Even better on second viewing.

Movies that go straight to dvd usually do for a reason. The fact that they are no good.

Avoid Jennifer's Body like the plague.

Direct to DVD no longer has the same stigma applied to it as yesteryear, plenty of great films are bypassing cinemas and in amny cases are superior.

    Rest Stop 1 and 2
    Sublime
    Otis
    Alien Raiders
    Undead or Alive
    The Burrowers
    Ninja
    House of the Devil
    Wolfhound
    I Sell the Dead

You're better off just going back years to films that you haven't previously seen.

Here would be a good place to start: IMDB Top 250 List

Defo. Best advice I've seen on where to go to watch films in a long time. Don't always be looking to the newer stuff that's just being released. Look back and see what other films have been released over the years that you might have missed and that are excellent to watch.

It's amazing how some people think that just because a film is old, that it is not worth watching. While in school, a friend of mine had some money and wanted to buy some DVD's, and asked me to recommend some movies to him. Off the top of my head, I listed off stuff like Goodfellas, Batman (1989), Se7en, Lethal Weapon and a few others...

He answered: "Ah no, they're all old, can't buy them..."

ffs... They're classics of their respective genres and thoroughly good watches, suiting almost any taste. But just because their year of release didn't start with '20--', he dismissed them. Stupid, if you ask me.

Direct-to-DVD (or in the past, the dreaded 'Direct-to-video') films tend to be terrible, cock-up films that have few redeeming qualities. Prejudiced? Yes. Correct. Almost every time!!!

That's complete bull. In recent years the direct to DVD market has been completely overhauled, and yes a lot of crap still gets released directly to the home market but so do gems like House of the Devil, The Burrowers, The Believers, etc, etc. House of the Devil is widely regarded as being one of the best horror films in years and has earned it's writer/director Ti West a number of accolades with many labeling him one of the most interesting directors working today. The film is a slow burning throw back to the great horrors of the 70s and 80s in which a truly menacing atmosphere is formed without the need of over the top gore or cheap shocks.

Ink is another great example of a film made to go direct to DVD which has been a massive success. The film made on a very limited budget compensated by having some truly original and innovative ideas. Like Primer it puts most blockbuster sci fi to shame.

People who say a film must be crap simply because it doesn't play cinemas are misguided and ill informed. It's the same people who will constantly bemoan the death of cinema and cry about how there are no more original ideas out there. It's this narrow mindedness and fear of actively looking for new things to watch which annoys me when I hear people including those I study Film with in college. I really am glad that I'm open minded when it comes to viewing films and will just as easily put on Sharks in Venice as I will the Seventh Seal.

The Tournament was good old fashioned action fun. It's the definition of pizza and a beer cinema and all the better for it.

I recently saw Shutter Island and loved it. Tried to watch it again and it wasnt the same. That happens with some movies. I wish i could wipe it from my memory so i could watch it for the 1st time again.

But with Primer, its like every time i watch it it's the 1st time again. (Possibly because i'm dumb, it took me ages to watch it 1st time from start to finish from all the rewinding)

Haven't seen shutter Island yet, probably will though.

Primer is epic, well worth the rewatches as every time, something new is unlocked. Strange...

Anyway Rachaidh me isteach mo leaba.

    *Yawn* Night! :P

There are actually, House of the Devil, The Burrowers, Sublime, I Sell the Dead and The Wolfhound are all triple A titles which could easily play on the big screen. House of the Devil is an amazing film and as good as Let the Right One In in terms of atmosphere and suspense. In a just world it would be playing on the big screen while mediocre tripe such as Friday the 13th should be direct to DVD. I Sell the Dead is equally as good albeit in a more horror comedy manner, it's quite similar in tone to Fright Night or the Monster Squad. The Burrowers is a superb horror western with enough genuine chills to make it all worth while. Sublime is well sublime, a great idea superbly executed and the Wolfhound is a Russian Lord of the Rings. Epic in scope with some genuinely thrilling moments and a fun script. Don't knock em till you at least try them.
