Not sure where to post this question???

How do i find if a website from the USA is safe. theres something i need to buy & although i can pay for item through PayPal, how would i be able to find out if the site is genuine & trustworthy.

I have be corresponding through email with the seller & all seems good, but i need to be sure i'm not throwing my money away to a scammer.
The website has a http// & a phone number but i haven't rang the number cause its easy to pretend from the other end that your someone your not.

Any advise will be much appreciated.

I know this might sound a bit simple, but find other people who have used the site/service.

If it's something that falls under one of the Boards.ie categories, try posting a thread in that forum to see if anyone else has had an experience with the retailer you're interested in.

For some low value items, where PayPal was an option, I've just taken the risk and paid without being absolutely sure. I wouldn't be seriously out of pocket if it turned out to be a bad sale (maybe thirty quid or whatever), and PayPal is a nice way of making sure you don't get any nasty credit card related surprises :)

    r*oc, Can I ask:

When you mention it has "http//", do you see any prefix such as https://?
Many browsers have messages stating if the identity of the website is verified. For example, Firefox (http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/features/#security) and Internet Explorer (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/features/safer.aspx).

You can also see website reviews - http://www.siteadvisor.com/ - just insert the website name and look it up.

If you're on Firefox, there's also Web of Trust, a plugin to help you browse better.

Can you give a link to the website, so people can have a look and advise?

Roughly what price is the item you want to buy? Do Paypal have a system whereby you can dispute a payment and request a refund?

Does the seller have a verified Paypal account?
