Clutch cable snapped - how much to repair?

I was driving in South Dublin yesterday and the traffic was very stop start along the Stillorgan Dual Carriageway - I could tell my clutch was in trouble as it started feeling very loose and would move forward in 1st gear even with the clutch pedal completely depressed. When moving I found it very very hard to engage different gears when in neutral and hard to get into neutral when engaged. Finally I had to stop after turning off the main road when I couldn't engage any gear at all, there was no resistance at all when depressing the clutch pedal.

I assume the clutch cable has snapped and arranged for the car to be towed. Any idea of how much it will cost to repair? With the long weekend I won't get the estimate until Tuesday :(

Get a cable from Tallaght auto parts for around €20 and you should be able to get it fitted by someone for around 25-30.

That's how much it cost me last year after a garage wanted 200+VAT

You have a cable? Lots of manufacturers have switched over to hydrualic systems.

beat me to it. sounds more like a fluid leak to be honest. what type of car is it.

If you have a cable that has snapped your pedal will be stuck to the floor.

Unless you have an older car I doubt you have a cable though and the problem lies elsewhere.

Just for reference I had to replace the cable on my car, cable was €30 and it took me an hour to do it myself. If it's not a job you'd tackle yourself budget for 1-2hours labour + around €20-€40 for the part

I think they are hydraulic, may be your slave cylinder leaking, unlikely to be the master cylinder.

Bad timing by the car! Breaking down on a long weekend you must be a wee bit pissed off.

I think you won't get much change from 200 TBH, if the slave cylinder needs replacing, so a bit of fluid drain and bleeding to be done too,
It's possible the hydraulic pipe rusted through and is holed, might not be cylinder. If this is the case get your brake lines checked.

A small leak from the master cylinder will be most likly cause. To get to a garage without towing you can top up the clutch fluid. the resevoir is located on the firewall just to the rear of the trottlebody. as you look at the engine bay standing in front of the car it is at the far left corner. there is two resevoirs one for the brakes and one for the clutch. the clutch one is the small one. remove the cap and fill with brake fluid and the go inside car and lift up the pedal off the floor. it should spring up itself. then press it down again and lift. do this two or three times. if the pedal gets firm then your good. if not then air will need to be bled from the slave cylinder. top up the resevoir and replace cap. paint dosent like brake fluid so try to be tidy. this is a temporary fix as leak is still present. i drove a honda for three months topping up daily. hope this helps.
