Finglas Road cycle lanes 01/04/2010

I wish this was some kind of elaborate April fools joke...

Was told the Finglas Road cycle lanes were updated a while back. What seems to be done is repainting and some ramps on/off the road have been partly fixed, which sounds good, but the state the route is still left as a sick joke.

Here's the set of photos in full. And some examples:

Cycle track -- along a steel railing -- left in disrepair after works.

    4482312983_6c5e3814a9.jpg
On-road cycle lane narrows at bend in road.

    4482963642_51a8c83007.jpg
    Unsuitably angled ramps remain.

    4482316363_c30ebeef5a.jpg
    New unsuitably angled ramps installed.

    4482967112_ee533783de.jpg
Sub-standard lane size, cycle lane on footpath, surface in a mess, non-legal bus lane sign used (these problems happen again and again along the route).

    4482319083_711c8566d3.jpg
Left turning vehicles are reintroduced into the bus lane before cyclists are reintroduced onto the road -- this happens at most if not all of these type of junctions.

    4482969688_83b724fda6.jpg
Ramp that looks to be apart of the upgrade to allow cyclists easier access back on to the footpath looks like it is being used by cars to access the filling station, increasing danger for cyclist. Cars would take one quick movement across the bus lane and footpath. Note the non-legal ped / cyclist sign.

    4482324129_ca8b073108.jpg
On road section of cycle lane narrows into the junction!

    4482325221_fc83e523c4.jpg
(something happened to the photo here at upload, but it's still clear) two cyclists side by side take up this footpath.

    4482326745_92440aa37e.jpg
Small, substandard advanced stop line where these was loads of space to make it larger.

    4482327325_136b380ae5.jpg
Three people walking fill this space without any prams, wheelchairs, dogs on leads, bicycles etc.

    4482327877_af1e706e88.jpg
Ends on a ped crossing and where cars etc will be taking a left hand turn. It's worse on the way back as you get these spaces downhill, where I picked up speed just free-wheeling.

Good work in documenting this. I hope you forward this on the DCC.

I have noticed that the road surfaces in DC Centre have become very poor over the past year,

    +1

As I've said many times it was better nothing was ever done and you took your chances on the road. In general the cycletracks in Ireland are crap:(

I'd love to see a thread with pics of great Irish cycletracks, do they exist?

The one up the canal is ok.

The Phoenix Park is ok for commuting. Because it's not on the road it wasn't destroyed by the snow.

The worst section of road I've ever gone over. (heading west)

I should really get pics, and I might do so. You literally cannot cycle over it on a racer at anything greater than 7-8kph.

Any one else familiar with this stretch?

Yes, it's a really awful road surface there. Very narrow cycle lane too, but at least it's on-road, I suppose.

I cycle the canal down from Broombridge in Cabra but wasn't to sure whether it was allowed or not. There are no signs to say cycling is permitted on what looks to be a footpath. Nice to know bikes are allowed as well.

Sorry I meant the Grand Canal on the southside. Never tried the Royal Canal.

I noticed it was just as narrow on the opposite side of the road. The lines seemed to be freshly painted when I saw it. I just assumed they were in the process of upgrading and not finished yet as there's no real distinction between the cycle and pedestrian paths (like the red grit further in at Glasnevin).
