There's no loop hole really mate!

best thing to do, since your over the 6 month mark, is move your tarrif to the lowest one(40 a month i think?) and then cancel....you'll still have to pay 440e to cancel the contract, or else have a black mark on your credit rating when you return from abroad!

I would suggest you call them (Freephone 1909) as I have heard before of people going abroad that were able to lower their tariff to a minimum (eg 10 euro) and pay that off monthly. Not sure if it's any different with the iPhone contracts but it's worth a shot.

Think thats the only way out..without having a bad credit rating. Just hope they can reduce the tariff!

Repeat after me: O2 CANNOT AFFECT YOUR CREDIT RATING.

Only financial institutions can affect your credit rating (i.e. banks). No one else.

I would advise you to pay the cancellation fee, but if you don't, your credit rating will not be affected. They may hand your account over to debt collection thugs who will hound you though.

As you're going to have to pay for it maybe find a mate who wants it and do a transfer of ownership so at least its not wasted? Then get the number changed if needed? Get the mate to contribute?

Friend of mine has moved to Canada recently, he is paying 02 €5 pm to keep his account and number active, but he is not in contract any more.

Unless you are planning on leaving Ireland for ever, best bet is to stick the phone on adverts, sell it and pay off the contract, that way you will be able to get the newer one when you get home.
