    Strategies for Success:
    Teaching Children with Autism in
    Home and School Settings

    This introductory workshop is designed to inform parents and teachers of practical evidence based strategies for teaching key skills to children with Autism. Through extensive use of video examples, the workshop presenter will demonstrate effective procedures for teaching communication and social skills to children with Autism and other developmental disabilities. The presenter will also discuss strategies for establishing cooperation within the classroom setting and effective procedures for managing problem behaviours in both home and school environments.

    Specifically, participants will be informed about:
    Teaching functional communication skills: early language training in the natural environment
    Promoting social skills and peer interaction
    Creating a willing learner: pairing staff and the learning environment with positive reinforcement.
    Developing a daily classroom schedules that incorporate numerous reinforcing activities (individual and group), thereby maximizing opportunities for functional communication
    Managing problem behaviours by utilizing research-based teaching procedures and through the application of basic behavioural principles

    Thomas Caffrey earned his BA in Education from Arizona State University and his M.Ed from Georgian Court University where he was honored for his work in training paraprofessionals to work with children with autism. In addition, he completed post-graduate coursework in behavior analysis at Penn State University and is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (#1-04-1820).


    He is an internationally recognized speaker that has given over 200 national and international conference presentations and workshops. Mr. Caffrey specializes in teaching functional communication skills and helping teachers implement strategies to manage problem behaviors in public school settings.
