Question Regarding Student Membership

Do most clubs have an age limit on their student membership? I'm a mature student and joined Athenry GC as a student member two years ago at age 25. Fees were around €220 a year. I just got my renewal form for this year and the price stated was €1600. This is a joining fee and I will have to pay €600 a year in subs. I called them up to see what the story was and they said because I'm over 25 I don't qualify as a student member and I was just lucky to get away with it for the last two years. Totally can't afford this. Feels like I just got kicked outa the club, the dicks!

Happened me as well a good few years ago, ended up leaving the club and golf in general for 5 years or so as I couldnt afford it.

Its a shame to be honest, no effort was made to help me remain in the club.

Rejoined a different club then with less fees.

Having the same issue myself, back to do a Msc. as a mature student and the club won't let me join. Pretty annoying, would think that they would appreciate the cash these days.

Most clubs as far as I know have an age limit. Age limit is 23 in my home club...

In my home club its 24 years old. You qualify for student membership if you are below this age and in college, or doing an apprenticeship.
Its a shame really that they would slap you with the entrance fee and annual sub, im sure some clubs would at least fore go the entrance fee until you have a job.

Most clubs are bond by their constitution as to what defines 'Student' and that's what determines the fee/costs. It would take an EGM to alter the constitution to bring it out of the '50 when if you weren't in work by 18 you were either in an institution or from a wealthy family who could afford to pay to further your education.
