MGMT are back in Dublin in September playing the Olympia on the 16th. Tickets are on sale next Friday. I better set the alarm for early

Was at the gig in the Academy a few weeks ago & it was dreadful. So I'll be avoiding it.

Hope they improve cause I'm sure it will sell out.

Dreadful. These guys really are as bad as people make them out to be.

wow can't believe i'm reading this, MGMT played an amazing gig at the academy. Each song from their first album was played perfectly, perfect harmonies and they're well able to play their instruments. Granted its difficult to get excited when a band showcases songs that you don't know, but bands general don't like doing that anyway due to lack of reaction from the crowd. The downside of the gig was that they played "Kids" over a backing track at the end, very disappointed.but this was my only complaint.

Not picking a fight here or anything, but would like to know why you thought it was a bad gig?

There's a thread about the last gig. Check it out. No point covering old ground again. Went to see Yeasayer about 2 weeks before MGMT, they were much better. They interacted with the crowd more, there were no drunken teenagers (granted not MGMT's fault), better mix of old and new that kept the crowd's attention so we could actually hear their new songs (and not the people who lose interest easily), and there were no karaoke surprises.

Does anybody know anything about pre-sales link for the Irish gig? The fan website has a link to the UK shows and the Irish one isn't listed there.
If I don't get tickets this time I'll be raging!

I wanted to buy MGMT ticket for the last gig, but sadly they sold out the day I was going to pick one up. Heard from many people they are crap live but I will judge that for myself, maybe these people didn't go to hear the wonderful music MGMT play.

Listened to Congratulations the album and it is also brilliant. Getting a crowd to go from here so should be a great day, get my tickets Friday or something :).

I have never been disappointed with a band I love at a concert, I just don't think it's possible.

Saw them in Sydney 2 nights ago

Agreed that they're not a very good live band.

Might as well have just stayed at home and listened to the CD

    Good songs though :)

Out of curiosity, anyone know who the support is this time round? Not too enthused about going to see them again after the woeful Academy gig but a friend has a spare ticket going so might as well join him. I just hope "At last, an atlas" aren't supporting again, they were pretty bland.

Just wanted to bump this thread.

Is this and 18+ gig? I know the gigs in the Olympia generally are, but I couldn't find anything on Ticket Master. Would love to bring my sister to this, she's a big fan.

from the Olympias facebook page - SPECTRUM supporting each night.

anyone know if these are worth a look?

    Think so.

They're fronted by Peter Kembler aka Sonic Boom who worked as producer for "Congratulations": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Kember

    Anyone?

as far as I know from the many gigs I attended here, it is usually stated on the ticket when a gig is 18+. No such remark on the MGMT tickets (I just doublechecked). But no guarantee for this, don't blame me if younger people are denied to access!

What time do you reckon SPECTRUM will be on stage at? I had planned to head in around 8pm but I'd like to make sure I see them.

I was going to ask the same thing. Doors are at 7.00 right?
It'sll prob be 8.00 by the time I get in. What time do you think the main act will be on? 9.00?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 914 ✭✭✭tommyboy2222

Main acts usually come on between 9 - 9 30.

Unless you are at a Guns n Roses gig of course :pac:

Can you walk in just before the main act? Not pushed about Spectrum, rather get an extra pint or two in before heading to the Olympia

For a band known to be pretty poor live I thought the show was great tonight. 2nd row in the circle, great sound and view.. was told the sound in standing wasn't great.

Yeah I thought the sound from the seated area was very good. Much better than the Academy, you could actually make out their new stuff.

Went to last night's gig, and I must say I thought they played very well. Unfortunately, the place (where we were) was full of very drunk student types who were obviously there for one song - no prizes for guessing which one!

We were down in the standing area, had to move three times to get away from little twats shouting insults up on stage and falling over (because presumebaly they didn't recognise the song, as it wasn't a single from the first album).

Getting a little tired of these 'fans' at a lot of gigs in Dublin who go to sing to their favourite song and shout through the rest of the set.

Those singles off the first album are now bigger than the band as a whole, the curse of success I guess.

Going to see them tomorrow night

About 9ish. They arrived fairly promptly, no "Guns and roses" nonsense.

I thought MGMT were great last night. Really pleased I got such a good performance after the terrible two reviews of their other two gigs in Ireland.

Band seemed in good form, they were vocally and instrumentally on the spot, great mix between "Oracular Spectacular" and "Congratulations".

I was standing just behind pit, sound quality was good and I was pleasantly surprised that crowd weren't just drunken idiots.

I found SPECTRUM very weak. None of tracks appealed to me at all and I didn't feel band were particularly engaged with music. Also the frontman gave off such a pretentious air - "This is not a song, it's a statement"

Anyway, hope everyone enjoys gig tonight.

thought last night was amazing ! great crowd, great venue , graet song choices and being so closed to andrew ;) was anyone lucky enough to meet them afterwards ?? also did anyone think SPECTRUM were awful ?

Met Andrew and Ben just outside the stage door, Andrew stayed and chated with us asking did we like new album.. Took pics etc. really nice people.. Didnt get into gig though because i was drinking before hand but still it was worth the trip up and 35 euro just to meet the band:D

YOU MET THEM ! I would kill someone just to meet andrew ! did you see them before or after the gig?i waited outside the stage door on friday for ages and they never came out :(

First time I have been at a seated gig but I will never do it again. Upstairs everyone was talking the whole time and could barley hear the band, except when Time to Pretend and Kids came on, then everyone went mental - had to stand because everyone went nuts for these TWO songs.

sick..... great band, two great albums but the audience really ruined it for me

met them before the gig.. andrew asked what we where drinking i says "its not your wadi its my wadi" then we all laughed and he stayed talking for a bit but they where going somewhere

Great gig last night, fantastic set, Brian Eno was the highlight of the night for me and Siberean Breaks.

But... Like some have said, the audience did ruin it a bit for me. I was standing and the amount of absolute spastics that were shouting and texting was ridiculous, naturally they all went mad for Time to Pretend and Kids. I was particularly annoyed at the couple that pushed their way through everyone to get to the barrier then spent the whole set talking to eachother, texting and mauling the face off eachother :mad:. Really rude.

That all aside, great gig, managed to meet the band afterwards and talk to them, lovely lovely lads :).

ugh mega peed of i didnt get to meet them  is it true they played indie rokkers on the saturday  from what i heard they have only ever played that song once live !
