This is probably better off in the Commuting & Transport forum.

C&T Mods - move back to 'East' if you don't think so.

There were still live exports in the 1970s (I think) and then the traffic all moved out of Dublin to Cork and finally Waterford where it went on till the 1990s but was mainly calves for fattening as veal towards the end.

I expect they all have people on board as cattle can't crew ships by themselves.

They go on normal ferries in 40 ft trailers, I should have been clearer that it goes on as mixed traffic.

I think the OP means special ships full of cows aka Cattle Boats.

About the mid sixties I would reckon.

John Mcarty remembers going on a cattle boat from Liverpool to Cork as a child so that would be cira 1959

Thanks for the info. I'm just trying to do some research as to when the last emigrants would have left on boats to England and shared them with cattle in poor conditions. From what I gather it was sometime after the war but still cant seem to get any specific date. I think as who the fug says it was late 50's, early 60's.

Narrow down ever further, my father needed to make up time for his masters ticket, so he three weeks on a Cattle Boat Dublin to Liverpool, that was in 1962

They were still running in 67 as my Aunt came to Ireland for her first visit then and was shocked but amused to see cattle being led up a gangway onto the ship.
