Plenty of public servants do. It's the unions that cause the problems in my opinion.

To be fair (yes, I know it's supposed to be a joke), all of the public servants that I know, want to get back to work properly and just forget about all this crap. They know and accept that the government's income is in the crapper and that they have to take wage cuts and pay freezes, because that's the pure maths of the situation.

The only reason anyone I know is engaging in industrial action is because they're afraid of what the union goons will say to them if they don't engage.

Peter Mcmenimin & Blair Horan were both on Morning Ireland this morning and it doesn't sound like they will get the deal past their members so i'm afraid there may be some way to go before all of this is sorted out.

I'm not surprised to hear that. I used to work in the civil service years ago and one thing I noticed was what I would call union bullies. These are the type that do the least amount of work but complain the most.

I refused to join the union out of principal as I don't like or believe in them but alot of people who want to get on with things and who understand the situation will be too intimidated to speak out. Everyone should bare in mind, the source of the problem is people like Jack O'connor. People like that exist only to make life difficult for other people whilst taking home a great salary and claiming with a straight face that they act for the little guys. The sad thing is that most of them probably believe they do :(.

From what I heard last night, it sounds more like the individual sub-unions (INTO and such) are opposed to it and are compelling their members to vote against it, but that doesn't give any real feeling as to how the actual members feel. Remember that for most of the votes about taking action on the paycuts, the majority of the unions' members either abstained from voting or voted against it. However, because a majority of those who bothered to vote voted for it, it went ahead.

I was watching Vincent Browne last night, and Vincent was comparing Private v Public Sector and Joe Higgins said do we really want to model everything on the Private Sector ie exploitative wages in some cases, no job security etc etc etc I agree its not an ideal model. But the PS model is the other extreme. So if we arent going to exactly bring the PS workers into the Private Sector world, we should atleast bridge the gap alot. In my opinion redeployment anywhere within the Public Sector should be a must (as per recent agreement) get rid of defined benefit pensions, an increase in the standard weekly working hours to reduce overtime. What else?
