People Power and your Bank Account

Ticked off? The feeling on boards is plain for all to see regarding the banking sector.

The question therefore follows, what can each one of us do about it?

Well, how about taking your business elsewhere? I finished clonsing my bank accounts in AIB and BoI today. Changed over to National Irish Bank (Danish owned) and Ulster Bank (British owned).

It's a no brainer. Costs are substantially lower (if at all), better rates, Visa 'debit card', More secure etc.

And most of all, I'm giving two fingers to my bank manager!

Many people I know would never occur to them to shop around when it comes to a bank account. You would for everything else, wouldn't you?

Two friends are already planning on joining me.

How are NIB and UB more secure than AIB BOI?

    (serious question)

the Irish banks are practically state owned now, so I think we might as well contribute to them earning a few quids and kick it back into the flailing Irish economy, instead of sending funds abroad. No matter how shambolically they've behaved, and we know how much all to well, every country needs a banking system so best to fix the one we've got because it ain't going anywhere....

Government using taxpayers money to recapitalise banks as they are short on money?

Well gosh I'll just spite them all by closing my accounts and reducing their capital even more.

    Fool-proof idea.

i'd be more confident having my money in an irish bank compared to UK banks at present, not becuase they are stonger, as they definatly are not, but irish banks are covered by the state garantee, if the bank goes under, you still get your money back, UK banks as far as i know, dont have that garantee, they only cover you up to an X amount

Actually we have loads locked away in deposits.
A recession does not mean that everyones cash disappears.

The banks F'd up bad - really bad - no defence.
But attemping to pressurise the banks by closing your account is cutting off your nose to spite your face.
