Getting into welding - trying to get a feel for cost of steel

    Hi,
As per title I want to take up welding as a hobby but first want to get an idea of how much the hobby will cost.

The first thing I want to build for example is is the miller welding table http://www.millerwelds.com/interests/projects/welding-table/

How much do you think it would cost to source steel for this?

Also what kind of place can you buy steel in normally? I rang an engineering company whom I thought sold steel in Galway city and they didn't seem interested at all.

    Look forward to any response...thanks.

    Hi Irlform
Try buying the steel at the hardware store, Homevalue hardware is a good place to start, for steel prices.

You can work out the weight of the steel by multiplying the length of the section by its weight per metre. You'll get the wt/m value from steel tables like these:
    http://www.roymech.co.uk/Useful_Tables/Sections/steel_section_index.htm

You can also work out the weight by calculating the volumn of the steel in cubic metres then multiply this by the density of steel which is 7.85kg/m³.

Steel cost's roughly 700 euros (+VAT) per ton at the moment. This figure depends on the sections you're using but it's a good guide.

There's a steel wholesaler in Oranmore called Coen Steel:
