Sorry forgot to come back about this...

I had a look and, yup, it's gonna be a casino. Or rather, a "Private Members' Club". By the folks who own The Italian Connection. It'll be open serving booze till 4am!

I read in one of the rags the other day that they weren't going to serve drink even though they have a licence.

They won't sell drink like a pub, will probably have a thing where members are allowed 2-4 drinks. I like card clubs. The other one in kk is just a bit too far out the way, this one will suit me perfectly

They can't sell alcohol anyway as gambling is prohibited where alcohol is sold. To another point made earlier, I tried to find the exact law but I'm unsure if they need a license or not to serve alcohol (I really should know this) or just to sell it for the purpose of consumption on the premises (as far as I know it's only for sale and consumption on premises).

Race courses have plenty of bars, Greyhound courses the tote is close to the bar. At the darts in City West Sky Bet have a bookies office 10 feet away from the bar.

Would like to see the exact bit of law.

From the gaming and lotteries act:

9.—(1) The licensee of premises licensed for the sale of intoxicating liquor shall not permit gaming on the premises.
[GA](2) This section shall not prohibit the licensee or his private friends from playing cards for stakes in a part of the premises other than that in which the sale of intoxicating liquor generally takes place if the friends are being entertained by him at his own expense.
[GA](3) This section does not apply to the playing of a game where no stake is hazarded by the players other than a charge for the right to take part in the game, provided that—
[GA]( a ) only one such charge is made in respect of the day on which the game is played, and
[GA]( b ) the charge is of the same amount for all the players, and
[GA]( c ) the promoter (if any) derives no personal profit from the promotion of the game.
[GA](4) A conviction for an offence under this section shall, if the Court in its discretion so thinks proper, be recorded on the licence.

There are special exemptions for certain events ant the Tote is special.
