Handball goal costs punter a fortune

A 72-year-old female punter lost out on a £7,750 windfall from a £4 accumulator bet after a footballer scored a goal with his hand.

Vac Price from Hailsham in East Sussex looked all set to predict the outcome of 10 matches correctly last weekend only for a 92nd minute "hand of God" goal from Wycombe's Gareth Ainsworth to ruin her bet.

Vac needed a Colchester to beat Wycombe at home in a League One match to complete her bet and going into stoppage time they were winning 1-0 before Ainsworth's effort.

Ainsworth admitted after the match that his goal had gone in off his hand.

"It skimmed my head and then it hit my hand and I will admit that. When you throw yourself at the ball then it can hit anything and I am pleased the referee did not chalk it off," he said.

Vac told The Sun that despite losing the cash she holds no hard feelings towards Ainsworth.

"It was one of those things. I certainly don't bear him any hard feelings", she said.

David Stevens, a spokesman for Coral who took the bet added: "I can't recall a losing bet as unlucky as this.

"We have every sympathy with her, especially as the player freely confessed to using his hand, but we have to abide by the official scores when settling bets."
