Wrestlemania VII/Wrestlemania VIII - Changing of The Guard

I bought a 'Tagged Classic' DVD recently, WM7 and WM8, and in no other point in WWE history do I really feel the brand has changed so much in a whole year. Wrestlemania 7 has a distinct, late 80's, old school feel about it - the entire event feels toned down in many ways - and feels classic.

The likes of Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart are just starting out (both of them are in tag team matches as it happens) and even Jimmy Snuka put over the Undertaker in the latters first Wrestlemania appearance. It would also be Snuka's last until WM25!

Fast forward a year and the entrance ramp is "lit up" with LED lights, we've got wrestling themes for almost every participant (as opposed to some the year before simply waiting in the ring as the match started), Shawn in a singles match, Bret looking to get hold of the Intercontinental title and Sgt Slaughter (WWF Champion and Main Event-er the year before) in an 8 Man Tag Team Gimmick Match. You've got more camera's, better quality footage, stadium is a lot bigger and looks a lot more "modern"

I really think Vince, and some of his team, used WM as a way of advancing the company - but to look at the contrasts between these two events and have such a change in image was incredible.

Thats a very good observation man... Well done. I know exactly what you mean though up until late 1991 the WWF still had that 80's vibe going on. It was like a transitional period where they didn't really know what to do or who to build the company around since it was obvious that Hugan wasn't exactly setting the world alight anymore.

Personally WM8 is my favourite. Not due to match quality or anything but it was the first one that I watched live and I was only a nipper. I had only seen bits and pieces of WM 5 to 7.

Definitely a changing of the guard. Did you hear Heenan at the opening bout between HBK-Tito saying Shawn was the star of the 90's? He was on the money.

Even if you look at the match listings, you'll see that WM8 had 9 matches as opposed to 14 or more that they had in previous Mania. I think they realised that WM was by miles their biggest show and should be booked accordingly, ie: no unnecessary squash matches.

very true. WM7 for example has a match where the Hart Foundation lost the Tag Team Championships against the Nasty Boys...it was about 4th on the bill, and yet, so low down for a match like that compared to the Tito vs. The Mountie match that was 2nd to last lol...crazy bookings
