Video has to be in .m4v, .mp4, or .mov format (full spec here).

Import your videos to iTunes (File > Add File to Library...), then sync or manually add to your iPhone.

EDIT @ Cyrus, no AVIs are not supported. iTunes will convert most videos for you (see here). Add the file to your library as above, then go to Advanced > Create iPod or iPhone Version. Then add the converted version to your iPhone.

By the way, the iPhone How To section of the Apple sites is worth a good look through. Plenty of tips and features you might not know about. (it's slow in Internet Explorer, but better in Safari and FireFox)

The simplest way is to download a movie converter (Lot available on internet - Recommend Handbrake for Mac, Complete list for Windows here :- http://download.cnet.com/windows/video-converters/)

Then Copy movie to iTunes and Sync.

    Simple

P.S. Try importing movie to iTunes first - It may not need to be converted at all. iTunes will do most things for you

    no you'll need VLC4iPhone for avi's,
so you need a jailbreak iphone for that

Sorry Bobby, but if you convert AVI's first using a converter and then upload via iTunes you do not need to jailbreak.

(I have used VLC4iPhone in the past and I endorse your recommendation - this is a great app if you are jailbroken)

thanks for all the repsonses guys. Is it possible to create subfolders within say "Films", "TV Programmes" etc either via iTunes or the iPhone so that files could be organised e.g. all episodes of Lost stored under one "Lost" folder.

    cheers

iTunes does this automatically for TV shows. You'll need select your videos and "Get Info" on them, and then set the name of the TV show. Then, all TV shows with the same name will be grouped under one icon in the TV Shows screen. You can give them series and episode numbers.

I don't think you can do it for movies (although you could tell iTunes that your movies are TV shows, and group them as you want). You can't create folders the way you can for playlists, for instance, because TV shows and movies aren't shown in the left navigation bar in that way.

Unfortunately, these groupings aren't carried over to the iPod (well, not to the iPod touch or iPhone anyway, I can't remember for sure about the Classic, and I don't have an Nano) - so your TV shows are just listed under the TV Shows section of the Videos screen in the iPod app.

(Similarly, playlist sub folders aren't carried over to the iPod either - I sent feedback to Apple just last night about that annoyance).

I bought a movie converter to convert from avi for my iphone 3g, the converter does convert the movies but when i bring them into itunes the movies are cut in time eg from 110 mis to 68 mins. Has anyone had this problem or know how to solve it?? am so dissapointed having paid for the converter...

There is a program called orb live

you install a desktop client, then install iphone application

this allows you to stream all your movies, music, photos and documents from home and work quite nicely over both gprs and 3g

    http://orb.com/

ok thanks just had a look at that website, so are you saying if i want to watch a movie from the train it streams it from my library over the airwaves rather than saving it directly onto my iphone? over gprs or 3g?, i always lose 3g for a portion of my commute, would that affect it?

EDIT: scrap that, i see you have to leave your home PC & I/net on, that'll never happen i turn off everything when not home! would prefer to solve my itunes issue and take movies with me :-) thanks tho

If thats what you are looking for,

try netflix, you would need to set up an account with them, also you would need to set up a VPN to America Server to get an American IP address.

But if you did this, you would have on the go access to over 12,000 movies. 100's of popular TV shows for about €6 a month.

Its a bit much to set up if you dont know how, but I do home consults if you want.

You could just download them from btjunkie in mp4 iphone format, if you already own a copy of the dvd you are not in breach of copyright law.
