Some people consider a tethered jailbreak to be a usable solution. It's not really though, I have the 3GS and havent bothered JBing it.

Of course it's a usable solution.

You need a computer to jailbreak it again if the phone turns off for any reason. You might find that acceptable but I don't.

You finding it unacceptable certainly doesn't make it unusable, as probably hundreds of thousands of people around the world would attest.

I was about to sign up to Vodafone and buy an iPhone but when I found out the 2GB data package included they provide can't be used with connecting the iphone to the laptop, it threw me right off. Can jailbreaking it allow me to use that 2gb allowance to connect to my laptop to get online does anyone know? Just the mention of tethered gave me a bit of hope :o

It does in my opinion., and the 1000 other people who've left comments here

    This is retarded.

I use it and have no trouble with it. Hundreds of thousands if not millions of others use it as well.

People coming on here asking about jailbreaking and being told that a tethered JB is "unusable" is completely unhelpful.

The only thing retarded is you vouching that millions of people have done it and have had no problems. You have no idea how many people have jailbroken the latest model or what their experience has been like. I sincerely doubt that many people have a model that can only be tethered JB.

Something may be usable, but unacceptable in terms of practicability and reliability. I used the incorrect word in my OP so let me correct:
In my opinion, the tethered jailbreak is unacceptable and not worth it.

Apple have sold something in the region of 12 million iPhone 3gs, with Cydia estimating that around 8% of iPhones are jailbroken.

It might not be in the millions but the numbers are fairly massive.

Wouldn't hold me back for a second. My iPhone has only crashed on me once. I'll be damned glad when I can reboot it without tethering for sure, but it's no biggy for now.

    I'm surprised it's that low!

I ended up going with Vodafone and got a 16GB 3Gs. Had I been 2 weeks earlier I would have got it for free as opposed to €79. Also to point out, I had to pay a €100 deposit which will be taken off my bill AFTER 6 months, or I can request a cheque back.

The next question is; I want to unlock/jailbreak/whatever it's called the phone so I can sell it if I decide to go with a Google Nexus One. If possible, I want the jailbreak option that lets you reboot without needing to connect it to itunes. I also want it to be unlocked to any network. Is it possible to do both with the 3GS or can I only do a tethered jailbreak yet because the untethered jailbreak hasn't been released?

Also, is it possible to revert to factory settings if need be and is it traceable that it's been jailbroken/unlocked if I do as I'd like to make sure it's in good working order before selling it on but don't want to discover any issues only to have the warranty void because of evidence of unlocking. Another thing I heard, can you only connect it to 5 computers in the phones lifetime? Is there a way to get around this?

I also want to be able to use the phone as a modem with my laptop with the data package included in my plan so I believe I'll need to use something for this too in the jailbroken iphone?

Would appreciate any help or links to files/video tutorials that will solve the above :)

You have some fairly specific requests I'll try my best to cover them.

At the moment neither an untethered jailbreak or an unlock is available for the iPhone 3GS if you on 3.1.3. firmware, it seems though that George Hotz has come up with a solution if you look http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com/ there, but he hasn't released it yet so you'll just have to wait.

I'm not too sure about an app store solution but if you jailbreak the iPhone in Cydia (the jail-broken app store) there's a few options to connect to laptops through WiFi.

And the connecting the 5 computer is about copyright and Apple says you can only Authorize 5 computers to sync your iPhone with, that's apparently to stop file sharing, I don't think there's anyway around this!

If you have any problems with your jailbroken iPhone you can restore it on iTunes and then it removes all your jailbroken-related stuff and you can then sync all your normal apps, music and video. when you restore your iPhone from a jailbreak there shouldn't be any evidence of it being jailbroken.

I stand to be corrected on this, but this is what I know to the best of my knowledge,

    Cheers,
    Eoin.
