'01 Mondeo 1.8 Question

    Hi,

I have an '01 mondeo lx 1.8 petrol. I recently found out about the problems with the butterfy valves in the inlet manifolds in the 1.8 and 2.0's in these models.

I've noticed a 'rattle' sound coming from the engine and decided to get it checked out. I was told my a main ford dealer that the butterfly valves are not working properly and to fix the problem i will need to replace the whole inlet manifold and was quoted at €600 - €650.

Since getting this quote i've read that the problem can be fixed by just replacing the valves and not the whole manifold, obviously greatly reducing repair costs. Has anybody had this done or can point me in the right direction?

    Any help will be appreciated,
    Alan

yes ive recently had this done on my 02 1.8 lx. ford dealer told me they didnt think just buying the flaps would work but i went ahead anyway, worked a treat and my mechanic showed me the existing ones, which although werent falling off had quite an amount of play in them (one in particular was bad) ill see if i can find the part numbers.
putting a screwdriver onto the manifold over the valves and putting your ear to it u will hear a distinct tapping/rattle noise from the bad ones.
ill dig out the link i used for the part numbers, parts came to €32 and i think it was €180 for my local mechanic to swap them along with a standard service. (it is a bitch of a job though to get them out)

i used the Finis code F1317276 from below and ordered the parts for next day delivery at my local ford dealer (they said i was the first person ever to order just the flaps and that id more than likely be back for a new manifold also)

I rang four Ford dealers in my area and they all told me it was impossible to order just the flaps alone! B**tards!

I ended up just removing mine completely and have not noticed any issues with not replacing them.

An easy way to check if the knocking sound is from the butterfly flaps is to pop off the vacuum hose on the front of the inlet manifold while the engine is running and if the noise stops, it confirms the valves are the problem.

its possible to order them seperately alright,
Heard before of people removing them completely and filling in holes. dunno how effective that is or what side effects there are.

I phoned a ford dealer near me within the past few hours (not the one who told me to replace the entire manifold). I gave him the Finis code F1317276 and said i was looking for 4, how much would they cost and how fast could i get them. Got a straight answer, €7.11 each (i presume before tax) and they would have them the next day for me.

I then phoned a local mechanic, explaining my situation. He said he wasn't aware that you could sort the problem without replacing the whole manifold but as long as there isn't any damage to the manifold he'd replace the butterfly valves. Waiting for a price back for this but imagine it would be similar to what johnny_adidas paid.

Its ridiculous that main dealers would screw people over so badly. This morning i thought it was gonna cost €600+.
