I was wondering if any one on here is doing this masters? I was thinking of applying but wanted a bit more information. Does anyone know the job opportunities after? Or the level of chemistry or physics needed as I am from a microbiology background.

    Thanks :)

I'm doing the MSc this year! It's a really great course! I wouldn't worry about what your background is in as it doesn't really matter - at the start of the year there are intro to biology, chemistry and physics modules which you take to cover the basics and gives you enough info to help you through. There's alot of essay writing involved but it becomes second nature after a while! The different modules that you take are well described on the DCU website. This MSc gives you great opportunity to do modules that you'd never think of doing e.g. science communication. Also be aware that there's a project you do that takes place over the summer which is a BIG part of your final grade! We're trying to get all our essays done at the min to make sure we're ready for the summer!! feel free to PM me if you've any questions! :)

Not too sure yet!! Haven't had a chance to really look for jobs yet because of the project during the summer that's part of the course! It's a great course that covers many areas :) anymore questions, just ask!!

im also considering doing biomedical science, are these two similar courses?

Nope they're two very different courses. The Biomedical Diagnostics course focuses on developing point of care (POC) devices that can be used in hospitals or doctors office i.e. new tests that are quick and easy to use, yet precise and accurate and obtaining results in a very short period of time etc. Your best bet would be to look at the prospectus for both courses and see what you think but i'd personally think that they're quite different :)

is it soley with a view to POC devices? Much covered on optimising methods for large-scale analysers like you might find in a lab?

Hi all, I applied for this course recently. how long where people waiting before they got their offers? website states to expect offers to be made mid july or later but surely places are offered before then, when where you offered your place?

I think it'd be sometime in july that i got the offer, maybe towards the end. They had about 80 applicants for 20 places last year, lots of shortlisting and phone interviews for the coordinators.

Does this master's just teach you how to use certain Medical devices, or can it lead to a career in developing and building such devices?

Career in building/designing diagnostics. Not alot about actually using them (you should be designing them to be user friendly, not requiring a degree like).

Covers lots of antibody use/development, genetics, spectrophotometry, biophotonics, micro fluidics, and some useful other topics like IP, ethics, and quality control.

Cool, sounds like the kind of masters I would be interested in doing! Have you any idea if there are many jobs in this field, or would even more study be required to get a job?

Do you know of many people who have been successful in gaining employment from this course becuase i Know somebody who was graduated from it last year(with a 1st) who was looking for a year for employemnt afterwards before finaly deciding to take up a PhD Position.

Just wondering if this is a general trend from the course or if many have been successful in gaining a position? Really want to do the course but want to make sure there is chance of employment afterwards before deciding

I'm not certain of the figures, but there seems to be quite a few ppl get jobs, one of hte lads i knew who diid it last year started work nearly straight after it. Best bet for numbers employed would be to email the course coordinator, her details should be on the page for the course.
