Who classifies a school as disadvantaged? And under what criteria?

The DEIS plan (pdf file) might have the criteria in it, but from memory I think they are along the lines of - numbers of single parents, % of children in local authority housing, % of medical card holders, retention rates, percentages sitting exams etc.

There have been so many different things over the years set up to try and tackle disadvantage - the latest being DEIS.

Thanks spurious, as informative as ever!

I'm doing a bit of research on social class and how students in schools are labelled according to it in terms of the opportunities they are given.

I'm looking specifically at disadvantaged schools/areas and what chances/opportunities for education are provided. It just got me thinking about who actually classifies a school as disadvantaged.
